15 minutes max for a reasonably fit person, though I'd allow 20 mins in the other direction, as its more uphill towards Newtown.

Come out of Newtown station main entrance, onto Albion Road in the downhill direction, then once you get past Swizzels Matlow sweet factory (you will recognise it by the aroma!) take a left onto Wirksmoor Road. Where Wirksmoor Road sort of veers off to the left, carry straight on onto Torr Vale Road. As you get to Torr Vale Mill, go down the steps and over the footbridge over the River Goyt. Then its a bit of an uphill pull to Central station.

Canm anyone tell me (from experience) how long it takes to walk from New Mills Newtown to New Mills Central ? Also, it the way obvious / signposted ?

MTIA

Head down Albion Road A6105 towards Hayfield

You will go past the Swizzels Sweet Factory – you can tell by the smell

Just after the factory, turn left into Wirksmoor Road and bear left into Torr Vale Road - the Midland Main Line through Disley Tunnel runs under Swizzels car park.

Sheffield and Hope Valley Trains far side,
Marple and Manchester near side.

As previous contributor said allow twenty minutes. Route slippery when wet.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to be trying this on Saturday, and have 23 mins to make it.

Anyone any suggestions for spending an hour in New Mills in case of mishaps ?!

According to my map reading Wirksmoor Road 'sort of veers of to the right (not to the left).

Also the second OP who gave directions sent the first poster up to the Rock Tavern pub, but claimed it was on Torr Vale Rd but to my reading, it is at the end of Wirksmoor Rd.

Both of you shoot me down if incorrect (i just had the first poster's interests at heart).

That millenium walkway and bridge looks interesting too.

Not local so come down on me strong if wrong.

I've managed it when the Hope Valley has been 10 down before. Running it in 10 minutes is perfectly possible with time to spare.
I managed to go to the chippy on the way back too..

Mission accomplished ! Took me 13 minutes - could have done it quicker, but kept stopping to take photos. Will post these as part of a blog on my Derbyshire Wayfarer round trip.

No-one warned me quite how "up and down" the route wass though - nor that at one stage there is a big gate across the track and we have to go through a little gap in a wall !

As promised a report of my journey between Newtown and Central.

I had 23 minutes to walk the 3/4 mile. As well as enquiring on here, I had also printed off a map from Streetmaps, and so was well prepared. But I was not expecting quite how much of an adventure it would be !

SORRY FOR SOME REASON THIS FORUM DOESN'T LIKE t i n y u r l !

The first part was straightforward ;( http://*******.com/newtown9016 ) cross the overbridge (http://*******.com/newtown9018 ), walk to main road, turn right (noting signpost to Central station – the only one I saw http://*******.com/dwgt13069019 ), over the canal, http://*******.com/dwgt13069020 pass the sweet factory, noting the mainline in cutting / tunnel. Then it got interesting. Turning off down a side street to the left, it rapidly deteriorated, then ceased to be a road altogether (http://*******.com/dwgt13069022 ), and headed rapidly downhill (http://*******.com/dwgt13069023 ), only to end with a big metal gate across it !( http://*******.com/dwgt13069024 ) If I didn’t know better I might have given up here – but I noticed a small gap in the wall to the left of the gate. The way was through that, turn back on my tracks, and down another steep slope [wouldn’t like to try this bit (up or down) in bad weather ] to a footbridge across the River Goyt –in a deep gorge here(http://*******.com/dwgt13069025 ). Crossing the bridge, to the left was a wooded valley (http://*******.com/dwgt13069026 ), dramatic enough in itself, but nothing compared to the view to the right. A tarmaced footpath was somehow clinging to a huge vertical wall (of which the railway was at the top of), with the river directly below. (http://*******.com/dwgt13069028 ) This was the fabled Millennium Walkway – definitely not one for vertigo sufferers.

My way wasn’t either of these, but up a steep path leftwards, past the signalbox, almost close enough to touch the signalman(http://*******.com/dwgt13069030 ), and out onto a roadway, directly opposite Central station. (http://*******.com/nmcent9032 ) Looking back there was just a little gap in the wall where I had come from (http://*******.com/dwgt13069031 ). The whole walk had taken me 13 minutes. In fact not only was I in time for my train (1413 to Sheffield), but also in time to see the 1401 to Manchester, as it was running 10 mins late. Interestingly this turned out to be two pacers coupled together. (http://*******.com/dwgt142063 ) My train was a couple of minutes late, and was 142012 – it would be a lively ride to Sheffield ! (http://*******.com/dwgt142012 )

This is just a part of my Derbyshire Wayfarer Grand Tour blog, which I will be psoting in due course in the Trip Reports section. Further photos of the day can be seen at http://grozzlepics.smugmug.com/Serenades I am still adding them.

Unfortunately your links gave me *OOPS* messages in Google Chrome. Has anyone been able to open these?

I haven't managed to open them either.

I'm thinking that Crewe and the flatlands of Cheshire must have affected Martin's understanding of what "steep" is - the roads and footpaths between Newtown & Central are all fairly average hills to those of us from the High Peak!

Replace the asterisks with the name of a popular URL shortening website.

(I personally hate shortened URLs when they're not needed. It's not like the forum database is running out of space - what's the point in shortening your URLs? It just detracts from privacy and the ability to see which website it is. The forum admins presumably have the same opinion).

Readability. A mammoth URL in the middle of a sentence really makes it harder to read. Admittedly it would be better still to make proper links, preferably using thumbnails for linking to pictures.
