I've been to one: Angel Road.

I've felt more in danger at Shipley station than most of the suburban London stations, there are plenty of passengers around most London stations, even in the evening.

I can't see why Shipley feels dangerous myself... It's by far one of the more inviting stations in West Yorkshire... well lit, lifts, waiting rooms CCTV, decent ticket office hours and a nice new ticket office in a waiting room...

Frizinghall or Ravensthorpe nearby are pretty uninviting.

Moston and Mills Hill give me very bad vibes too.

Dump by name, dump by nature? I don't mind places being isolated, it is where abouts in our fine country that they are isolated that makes me think twice.

Definitely by nature too. On my trips through earlier I noticed the station name signs have got very dirty and green in the middle. Unfortunately on some it obscures the 'ton P' of the station name and as a results it reads 'Dump'. Humorous.

On the whole, I'd say Dumpton Park isn't somewhere I'd absolutely avoid at all costs, but if I could then I would.

At night it's pretty deserted and I've seen gangs loitering, usually in the car park or on the station drive.

It doesn't feel dangerous, but it's not somewhere I like to linger at night.

A lot of the Greenock stations on the Wemyss Bay line are pretty lively, Branchton, Drumfrochar & Whinhill serving some areas that are rough by Greenock standards.

Have never used Castle Bar Park but when doing the Greenford line noted that practically every flat was "boarded" up with those metal sheets. Rare to see in London Certainly wouldn't fancy hanging around there at night & I'm not easily scared.

Sadly.. Paignton.. the station is an absolute dump...which gives you an indication of what you are letting yourself in for should you choose not to head straight onto the steam railway..
The town is a complete dump.. its full of druggies and chavs in shellsuits and fat birds in primark legging, complete with feral kids.. yuck..
If Paignton booted all the Scousers out and reclaimed its identity as a good old seaside town it could, once again, be a cracking destination.. as it is its more of a crack destination..

As Morrisey once sang.. this is the seaside town, that they forgot to pull down... come armageddon...

Where does that remind me of?

Ah, Birkenhead Park.

If Paignton booted all the Scousers out
We scousers are a friendly lot. It's just unfortunate that a small number have devolved into cretins over the years.

I love that song :D

I've decided Chester should be added to the list.
Upon every visit to the station I couldn't help but find the atmosphere of it rather depressing. Also, there isn't enough capacity on the stairs/overbridge during rush hour and you're left p***** off by the time you eventually battle your way out of the station.

Never enjoyed going there.

Hate going to-from-through Chester as well, feels cold in mid Summer when the temperatures are 25C+, the views from the station are not great either, plus a long walk to the City Centre & bus station, awful station.

I bet you if Paignton booted all the Scousers out there would be about 1 less person. We have rubbish seaside towns that are much cheaper to get to. :D

When I was there last summer waiting for a replacement bus following a man threatening to jump off a railway bridge, there were some individuals of the character described above who looked as if they would be getting a little hot-headed and unpleasant if the wait went on any longer.

Unfortunately, they didn't manage to source a very big bus for us all, but taking the service bus X80 (First) to Totnes for the XC HST from Penzance back home was probably a very wise move.*

*This was after being startled at the price of the Stagecoach service to Newton Abbot. Thankfully the times worked out and they arranged ticket acceptance on First.

Staying with Devon, St James Park has never been a favourite station of mine. Waiting there by myself for the last Exmouth - Exeter wasn't too fun!

I also second that. Lovely city centre though, it's just a shame the station is so far away from it. It's also a bit of a trek from the entrance to the platforms on the far side of the station.

I'll nominate South Ockenden on the Fenchurch St line. Full of chavvy little tw*ts eyeing up the disembarking passengers.

And South Ockenden is a dump.

Ha ha, I hope that doesn't colour your view on all of us. I'd be quite happy if the idiot element were sent back home here so we could teach them a lesson in how to behave instead of making us look bad.

Eric Parker writing in his book Highways and Byways in Surrey had this to say about Guildford. "To arrive at Guildford by train is like walking into a garden over a rubbish heap." (Second edition, 1909). He wasn't just referring to the station itself but I assume that was one of the intended recipients of his remarks.

That was the old station. With the new station, opened in 1987, I don't think the toilets are anything great. The front entrance is OK though. Having never seen the former station I can't compare. All that remains of it is the back entrance; footbridge and platform concrete and bricks. The current roofs on the platforms are dirty plastic. Were glass at one stage I believe but that couldn't stand up to the vibrations of the trains passing through.

If Paignton is that bad, then I can assure you Scousers would not even bother going, they have better standards and as "fowler 9" stated, they have rubbish seaside towns are much cheaper to get too (also nearer) which included Rhyl, Abergele, Southport and Blackpool!

I visited Leeds for the first time today and my first impression of the station was "wow, this is depressing". There just isn't enough natural light within the station.

That said, the city centre is surprisingly quiet and so far I quite like it.

The station honestly needs brightening up somewhat though.

You should've seen it before the rebuild! I agree though that the roof needs a good clean. Though if they cleaned it this weekend, by the time all the planned electrification is done it'd need doing again- by 2020 there'll be far fewer trains belching diesel fumes and soot (less 185s on TPE and presumably EC will be electric only at Leeds) under there, so maybe it's better to just wait until then!

I agree with whoever said Newton (Lanark), not the nicest of stations to be standing around in for long.

Same with Charing Cross (Glasgow), must be one of the lowest stations on the network with those stairs.

My nomination would probably be Rutherglen, a station underneath the motorway bridge, I wouldn't like to be hanging around that station for a long period of time, 10 minutes was long enough for me

All of the Torbay stations are in the midsts of a refurb. We arnt allowed new trains or lines to help us get to work, but we can damn well have a new bog and be happy with our lot!

You should see the Voyagers coming in from Manchester, usually fully packed out and it ain't local traffic.

For the life of me I do not understand why they don't extend the platform at St James. Damned Pacers can't even open the whole front door when doubled up.

Alot of the branch stations are very shoddy these days, dunno if its FGW or the community groups not being active, but theres just no investment in 'em.

I recently did a Havant - Brighton trip. Barely a soul to be seen, but all the stations are spruced up, two or three trains an hour in what felt like a complete backwater...!

Why can't we have that exactly?

I've never been particularly fond of waiting at East Kilbride for a train to Glasgow.

I have to say, even though it is a nice station in infer structure ways, Banbury always has a horrible Coffee smell meaning that it is hard to stay there for a long time, especially when the wind is blowing in the right direction. Also you can hear the M40.

It wasn't so bad before they built that bridge. The only problem it had back then was the incredibly long, pishy walkway with brown plastic/glass.

So something a bit different, any minor station on a two-track section of the WCML, such as Winsford and Hartford.

I say that because having freight and Virgin Pendos going through at full whack every few minutes is unpleasant enough in the daytime, but at night when you're waiting for the last train home, it's the worst as you're stuck on the platforms (waiting rooms locked when the part-time ticket office closes) meaning you get your ears blown off by the noise of the trains and any benches are taken up by kids who aren't even getting a train in the first place.

Winsford in particular has an awful footbridge which I believe is getting renovated, but you used to be able to reach the overhead wires from it. Surprised kids never messed about with them (either that or I'm taller than I realise).

I was surprised at how old Berrylands station was with its wooden steps with gaps in between. Given its in London and they recently extended the platform, I'd have expected it to have been modernised. It was OK last night after 11pm but not sure I'd want to spend 59 minutes there.

I think I got away with it! ;)

Leeds itself is a nice enough place and I'd happily go there again. But Burley Park station, five minutes away, is somewhere I'd rather avoid after dark. The local population are quite 'animated' when drunk.

That'll be the students then... or those that have been to gigs at the Brudenell.

I visited Banbury about 1 month ago by train having not been there for over 30 years. The town is a hole I am afraid. Station is clean but is once of those soulless 1960s concrete rebuilds. There is nothing to do there.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I would like to add Bracknell after the station building has closed and you are on your own on the platform. Bracknell I am afraid is chav central and some of those wandering down to the station can be quite intimidating. Station is okay though from a building point of view.

Newport.

What other station would fail to put a pavement in on a road leading out of a car park to head to a nearby shop?
