(Updated 3:10pm 16th April 2015)

A man has died after being hit by a train south of Harrogate.

He was struck near Crimple Viaduct shortly after 1.30pm.

The incident is causing delays of up to 60 minutes on the line towards Leeds.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokeswoman said: "Officers were called to reports of a man being struck by a train near Crimple Viaduct in Harrogate at 1.36pm today.

"A man was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are currently working to identify the man and inform his family.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Very sad, but you don't get onto the track near Crimple Valley viaduct by accident. Thoughts with all on the train and dealing with the incident.

Could he have walked through Prospect Tunnel (which can be done, as it can be seen when heading towards Leeds) and ended up near Crimple Valley viaduct?

I don't mean to speculate unduly, but a little bit of google-ing turned up this: http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/prospect-tunnel-harrogate-31-01-2008.t26971

open at both ends

Need I say any more?

Actually, I also came across this on google as well: http://www.forgottenrelics.co.uk/tunnels/gallery/prospect.html

There is a public footpath which crosses the line to the north of Pannal station. Also, in my experience of watching trains near there, they travel at almost walking pace when turning on to the viaduct.

I think the speed limit is 10 or 15, but Pacers are often far slower, especially Harrogate-bound as the curve is so tight.

I know the driver of the train involved.
My thoughts go out to him.

Oh goodness. I do hope he's okay.
