You get all sorts between Florence and Rome, including some sections with classic trains using the Direttissima for a short distance (eg Florence-Arezzo).

The fastest trains are all high speed ETR emus, both FS Frecciarossa/-argento and Italo services. Assuming you're travelling rather than train watching?

Onto the Milan-Florence-Rome route the most popular trains are the Frecciarossa and Italo. Frecciarossa are ETR 500 and some ETR 400 (Frecciarossa 1000). Italo are executed by ETR 575 (Alstom AGV). From Florence to Rome there are also Frecciargento (ETR 600/610), Intercity and Regional trains. All Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Italo are EMU, than Intercity and Regional trains are made up by a lot of different types of stocks (usually type Z coaches for Intercity and type MDVE/MDVC or type X revamping coaches for Regional trains). These are not EMU, regional are push/pull trains, Intercity are coaches pulled by E 444 or E 402 locomotives.

I'm travelling rather than watching but interested in what to expect. I have no prior knowledge of Italian railways ( other than the recent purchase of a Platform 5 book ) & am trying to decipher the various classes I might encounter.
Should be an interesting trip!
