chance will have me in Edinburgh this evening in time to have a wee trip on the loco hauled services on the Fife circular. Can any one help me with:

1) Best/most appropriate fare to do the whole circle

2)If it is possible to cover both diagrams and end up back in Edinburgh via the return working round the circle

Can't help with the fares, but you can get both locos on the evening turns by doing the second set to Inverkeithing and then hanging around for the first set coming back to Edinburgh.

When 45135 and I did it May we bailed off the second set at Dunfermline Town but we had to leg it over for a unit back to Inverkeithing (Its a plus 11, so in theory should be easy, but it wasn't and the next unit South is over an hour later, missing the first loco).
You do have a plus 20 at Rosyth for the same unit, which cuts the waiting time at Inverkeithing down to 35 minutes.

That's one way of doing it, though if you want to do the full circle you won't be able to get both locos in.

If you want to have a trip round the circle, and see both loco-hauled sets and get decent photos, I'd do the 1708 Edinburgh to Glenrothes, stay on it as it becomes the 1815 Glenrothes-Edinburgh, and get off at Dalmeny (arr 1858).

The ECS from the second set from Cardenden to Mossend passes through 20 mins after. A good angle of it coming off the bridge is available. Then get back to Edinburgh on the 1930 from Dalmeny.

Only downside to that plan is you won't get a ride on the second set, if that bothers you?

Tickets - a CDR to Glenrothes from iether EDB or HYM can be started short at pritty much any station other than EDB or HYM Where they fall fowl of evening peek restrictions plus a further restriction on foalk using it for round trips on the LHCs. I wouldnt do it at South Gyle unless your already onboard and note this train does not call at North Queensferry in iether direction. A group of us including Mojo and Yorkie did this without hassle last week, starting at Dunfermline QM and buying in advance and collecting from the TVM.

thanks for the advice - sadly the journey up didn't go to plan and i missed the first service plus i ended up being met at Edinburgh so had no free time for the second.

Just had a very quick trip on the evening LH 1708 Edinburgh to Haymarket the 68s sound pretty good. Shame I couldn't go further but had to train to catch back south to York.
1 question I do have is what's the difference between the braking on this and other mainline LH sets and HST braking?

yes it is easy to forget the different sound hauled coaches make when breaking - many posters here will be experiencing that for the first time

Mark 2 coaches have tread brakes, which make a very noticeable noise under braking. Mark 3 and 4 coaches have wheel-mounted and inboard disc brakes respectively so are much quieter.
