Article in local newspaper about plans by Swansea city council to re-open the station at Landore as a means of reducing the traffic congestion around the area especially with the parking on match days at the liberty.

I do think a station could work in this area if its possible to put platforms on the liens to Cardiff and west Wales however only local services should call there.

With electrification there should be room for EMUs to make a stop there.

In yesterday's Post, Swansea East AM Mike Hedges acknowledged the council's measures so far.

"Landore had a small station that was in use until the early 1960s," he said. "It had a small platform and people were able to catch a train into Swansea from it.

"The basic platform is there and whilst a large train could not stop there, a smaller train could."

"The station is well within walking distance of the football ground and it would allow passengers including away supporters to get off and go to the ground without needing to go into Swansea," he said.

The president and secretary of Swansea Bay Business Club, Bruce Roberts, has backed up Mr Hedges.

"I'm delighted to hear that it may be on the agenda again — it's a no-brainer," he said.

"We have people coming to the games from the West and from the East, there's a triangle there and it's a more than perfect place to have it"

Where was the old station at Landore? On the triangle or what?

Whatever, if they don't strengthen the trains, surely we will end up like the new stations on the Nuneaton - Coventry line - stations closed on matchdays :)

Was there ever a station further west, on the Carmarthen line, at Crockett/Fforestfach?

I'd have thought putting one there might reduce commuter car journeys?

better still, put in the loops needed for the service, and run an hourly Ammanford - Swansea service. With some extensions to Llandeilo.

There is the remains of the station at Cockett. I do think the platforms remain at Landore. I believe the station was where the west wales diverged from the line to Cardiff just before landore depot

Just on the Neath side of Landore Jn. which is the Junction where the Swansea Avoiding Line leaves the Cardiff to Swansea Line just before Landore Depot.

so just past the western end of the viaduct?

I confess I can't remember the remains of an platforms there - but it was a long time ago.

Yes. This is Landore High Level we are talking about. There was also a Landore Low Level on a line which branched off just north of Maliphant Sidings and passed underneath the viaduct by which there was the Low Level station.
The route, now closed, continued to Morriston.

Thks. It rings faint bells.

I find it depressing - if the paper has correctly reported it - how Mr Roberts can so easily come out with a trite statement like "It's a no-brainer."

I mean, this man is supposed to understand business. If this project goes ahead, what use will the station be apart from serving the stadium? Is there any population to speak of in the area that is likely to use any trains that stop there - aside from perhaps two dozen league and cup games a year? (and maybe some odd events that they hold at the new stadium?)

As for his premise that: "We have people coming to the games from the West and from the East, there's a triangle there and it's a more than perfect place to have it"

Well, surely no train from the west will stop there (unless it happens to reverse in Swansea HS and stop on the way east to Cardiff).

I would think any investment into a new station at Landore could be better spent elsewhere in the area.

I find it ironic that Swansea business people are actively backing a plan which could mean that people attending events at the Liberty Stadium could do so without having to go into the city of Swansea ... thus adversely affecting the money coming into the city!

It would also be good for accessing the local retail park as well as surrounding area's. The roads are very congested at rush hour and I think workers who travel to landore might be more encouraged to use public transport particulary it avoids having to get a train all the way into Swansea high street then having to change onto a bus and get stuck in the congestion

That maybe however local residents etc are being affected by a lot of illegal parking by people visiting the stadium plus the congestion is getting worse

There was a local campaign back in the 90s to reopen cockett station just west of its original location. It came to nought, but I suspect the improvements in service at Gowerton will have killed it off for good now.
