Ansaldo STS and Linbrooke Services have been awarded a £34.5 million contract to resignal 56 kilometres of railway in the East Riding of Yorkshire between Ferriby and Gilberdyke.

In a statement, Linbrooke said work would begin this month, with final commissioning scheduled for March 2018.

Computer based interlocking (CBI) technology, which has previously been installed on HS1 and the Cambrian Lines, will be introduced on to the route.

Ansaldo STS, which is leading the consortium, will design and supply the CBI system. Ansaldo will also design, supply and integrate the axle counter system...
It will mean the closure of the following largely Victorian signal box/gate crossings: Melton, Welton, Brough East, Crabley Creek, Cave, Broomfleet, Oxmardyke and Gilberdyke. Probably Green Goit too! All of these boxes are normally open from around 05.15 to 23.15 hours Mon to Sat so restricting any night trains in/out Hull from the West. Once complete it will mean just Hessle Road (Not 24 hours) and Hull Paragon (Already 24 hours) will remain open.

Has also been reported on Radio Humberside and BBC Look North tonight.

I am surprised that even Hessle Road and Pargon are to remain I wonder for how long ?

Also it could be the end of Cinderella railway to Hull.

So the line still won't be capable of 24 hour operation due to Hessle Road (presumably)? Also how do Ansaldo propose to do this work with Hull being the Capital of Culture in 2017 - presumably NR don't expect / don't want many people to come by train?

Has the route from Thorne through Goole been resignalled yet? Or the line from Selby?
If not then unless those controlling boxes are remanned then the provision of 24 hour cover in Hull is not required.
The only benefit may be the ability to despatch or receive trains at a slightly later time than now.

I have been subject to delayed possessions many times along that route and suffered the attitude of signalmen not staying behind long enough to get engineering trains to sites after last trains were delayed and the boxes started closing down.

Story came from BBC. They saw it in a trade paper and confirmed with me. Yes, the re-signalling over covers Gilberdyke to Ferriby only. Eastwards that just leaves the following: Hull Paragon is 24 hours anyway so that just Hessle Rd box. Gilberdyke to Selby is controlled by Selby West. Think Selby West is 24 hour. After that York. Gilberdyke to Goole - Green Goit, Saltmarshe and Goole Bridge and Goole. Beyond is Doncaster. No, Network Rail have had meetings with City of Culture team who have assured them that there will be no major disruption during 2017. The works were supposed to start earlier but have been put back because of this.

Well its easy enough to put in one more staff into Hessle Road as there will be plenty of signal persons redundant after the other signal boxes close down after resignalling as they won,t be needing many to work it at York ROC.

Thats correct Gilberdyke to Selby West is now 24 hour as I believe that even Selby swing Bridge is also now 24 hour as against it opening after last train and
bridge operator going home and closed again by the day bridge operator the
next day.

If they include Gilberdyke to Goole Bridge in the scheme then that too can be available 24 hours too as both Goole Bridge and Goole are both 24 hour.
They have already installed the line side toughing already down that route and all the way line side towards Hull as well.

Originally it was mooted that it was to be Christmas 2016 for commissioning after the other side of the river was done Christmas 2015 ( Grimsby / Immingham areas.)

Wonder what will happen about Crabley Creek crossing and the farm on the other side of it?

Green Oak Goit is a crossing between Gilberdyke and Saltmarshe, its a maned crossing now, it used to be a crossing where the crossing keeper lived in the house and came out to open the gates as required.

Permission to open the gates comes from Gilberdyke and the gates open away from the railway and are left open after last train and closed before first train in a morning.

Crossing keeper is located in a Portacabin now instead of the old garden shed that used to be there.

Just some more staff to go .
