Blue-Collar Railway Careers

I'd just like to know what some blue-collar railway careers are so I can have a look into them in case I ever go for the railway. I know drivers, guards and on board staff is blue-collar (at least in the traditional sense) but I've never worked a day in my life, and you know by now I can't really count on getting into them roles as an inexperienced outsider.

I ask specifically for blue-collar work because I've done two weeks of work experience in an office, and while it was good it was drop-dead boring. White-collar work to me feels so unproductive, and I'd rather clean my whole house than sit down on a computer being told what to write. I want to use computers for fun, not for a living.

So what blue-collar jobs are available on the railway for an outsider who has very little or no work experience under his belt? Would be very much appreciated if you could simply name a role and tell me about it so I can consider looking into it if I ever decide to go for the railway.

Like any job, railway or not, you'd be better off telling us how much you would like to earn, (salary), and what you're qualifications/specific interests are. There are likely to be hundreds of different jobs in the rail industry!

I am quite sure that some of the competent members on this very forum can then produce an effective list of suitable jobs you may be interested in!

Of course, how silly of me. I have six GCSE A*-C grades, one completed Level 2 Engineering course. I'd like a good salary that pays well, and my specific interest is in the trains themselves.

I would be alright with a customer service job, but since I have Autism that's gonna be hard to get, same with safety related jobs that I would prefer over customer service, but I can't be too fussy, cause I do want to move up to driver eventually, which I also can't be too fussy with. Anything not white-collar really, it might not even be related to the jobs I've suggested.

I'd like to avoid hopping between too many companies to get up the ranks, even despite my questioning how that would look, so any specific companies people can suggest might help.

Sounds like you should go for an engineering apprenticeship, best training around in blue collar and plenty of opportunity to move to other roles following training.
