On Tuesday night Channel 5 are showing a documentary programme about Brady using his own words ! I really can't think of any good reason why anyone would want to make a programme about this killer. For what he & Hindley did and put those families through, imo this is probably one of the most inappropriate pieces of broadcasting in a long time

For some reason Joe Public has a macabre obsession with serial killers, and the broadcasters know this.

I'm as guilty as anyone else of this. I just find it fascinating, but I can't really explain why.

Inappropriate though it definitely is, I'd wager Channel Five's documentary gets decent ratings - and that's the bottom line for the producers of that show.

I'll probably watch it, Brady has apparently been close to death for years, that day can't come soon enough as far as I'm concerned.

I think I'll pass on that one. There's nothing more I want to know about Brady, and, as its Channel 5, it will be sensationalised and interspersed with adverts every ten minutes.

I understand he has been force fed for years.

He wants to die. That in itself is sufficient reason to keep him forcibly alive.

I was not even born when he was found guilty at the Assizes (by the way, Beeching abolished those!) Such a monster is best forgotten.

Are you sure about that? I know that patients/prisoners with certain mental health conditions may, in effect, be force fed, but since 1999, in the case of Brady? I would be extremely sceptical, because I can't see it would be legal without his consent over that period of time, in which case it is not force feeding.

As of 19 June 2013 he had been force fed for the previous 13 years. I have no reason to believe anything has changed.

Update: as of 26 March 2016 he is still being force fed although he does break his fast whenever he feels like doing so. The doctors force feed him as they feel necessary.

Psychopathic killers have always existed. They are rare, almost impossible to detect in advance of their crimes and impossible to prevent. However, it does no harm to study them as thoroughly as possible, in the hope of detecting patterns which might identify future offenders. So far, this has been a disappointment because each offender seems to be as different to the next as to the common pool of criminals.

Brady and Hindley should have been hanged for their heinous crimes instead missing out by months when capital punishment was abolished in 1965. Would have saved the country a fortune by now.

There are several common signs between them, though. We haven't made no progress at all.

The female psychopathic killer is, arguably, even more interesting and instructive to observe and attempt to analyse, particularly where they have acted in concert with a male. Myra Hindley always portrayed herself as in Brady's thrall, but many who were involved with her over the years believe it was probably her who egged Brady on even further. Rosemary West was much more intelligent than Fred West and probably much more perverted sexually. Mary Bell is a name possibly not known to many now, but her case and the excellent book written about it reveal an almost unbelievable cruelty in one so young.

no they shouldn't. That serves no purpose other than revenge and any punishment rest upon the vague notion of a worse place awaiting the evil.

Exactly. Keep him alive as long as possible and confronted everyday by the enormity of his crimes.

If they'd done that some of the victims would have never been laid to rest.

Perhaps I expressed myself badly. What I intended to say was that we are still quite unable to detect in the general population, individuals who are more likely than most to commit random psychopathic crimes. This is in contrast to conditions such as Huntington's disease, or even Type II Diabetes, where we have a much better idea who will get it than we did fifty years ago. Of course, it might be a mistake to compare a psychological condition with a physical one like diabetes. Hope this clarifies my view!

Quite an interesting programme, it showed just what a devious and manipulative individual he is.

Perhaps it's time Brady was released after such a long period of incarceration. Arguably people have committed equally heinous crimes in the intervening years and been sentenced served their time and been released.

However his notoriety and lack of contrition probably make this unlikely.

I well remember Lord Longford petitioning for his and Hindleys release on parole in the seventies.

And talking to warders at a prison that Hindley was in, I learned how she used to laugh at the stupid old duffer after he had left from a visit.

Those 2 famous pictures of Ian and Myra may not have influenced the sentence of life in prison, but not of them getting free ever. This of course pending a parole hearing.

It strikes me that Brady may have achieved legal history by being the last prisoner still serving a sentence passed by an Assize court.

I was quoting Hindley.

Don't worry most of us understood what you meant;)

I know somebody who used to work at Cookham Wood where Hindley was once held and it seems she was almost as devious as Brady.

I can't see any case for Brady to ever be released
