Hi All, just looking for ideas of a long distance rail journey that can be completed in one day from High Wycombe that won't be too much for 1 adult and 1 16-25 railcard holder. I'm looking for a route that is scenic and I would want to travel on a comfortable train (Voyagers not allowed) Thanks and I look forward to hearing your suggestions :)

How much is too much? Where's your ideal price point?

Advances to Cheltenham are cheap, and the line is scenic (especially after Swindon) but I don't know how you will be able to get to Reading.

The Cotswold line is also scenic, you can split at Hanborough also.

I can't think of anything scenic on the Chiltern Mainline

Do Chiltern do Advances?

What about up to Carlisle and back via Cumbrian Coast or Vice versa. Can get some good locohauled services if you time it right. You can get advances fairly easily for both legs.

That sounds like fun, what station do I put my journey via to get advances via the Cumbrian Coast?

You will probably need to split at Birmingham and will have to search for each leg separate.

Try Birmingham-Carlisle via St Bees should do it.

Here's an example Itinerary (based on 24th May, No fares checked)
Code:
0600 High Wycombe - London MYB (16x)
0730 London Euston - Lancaster (Pendolino)
1025 Lancaster - Barrow in Furness (37)
1140 Barrow in Furness - Carlisle (37)
1510 Carlisle - Birmingham N Street (Pendo)
1842 Birmingham Moor St - High Wycombe (16x)

Is the route from Paddington to Penzance nice?

Yes, the best bit is probably Dawlish, or the Cornish bit where you wind through hills and over viaducts, the Berks and Hants line through Wiltshire is quite nice also.

But it is 5 and a half hours long!

I would also say that Devon/Cornwall is nice - Dawlish is a highlight as is the Royal Albert Bridge. The whole run from Plymouth to Penzance is quite nice really, but just very slow!

Just to prove how opinions can vary I prefer the section between Newton Abbot and Tavistock Jn. A succession of steep gradients make the train work hard and views of Dartmoor, often with red Devon soil standing out. Too bad I rarely get down that way.

Jesus Christ Ray! That ain't cheap! I thought you meant £20 - with a y p railcard you could get to Thurso or Penzance first class

I was expecting something sub-£50 before I opened the thread, I must say. World is your oyster for triple that!
