Unfortunately, I think Compton has had his time and expect him to be replaced, whether the same will happen to Vince, age is on his side.

It's not very often you'll hear a Lancastrian praising the batting of a Yorksherman, wonderful performance by Jonny Bairstow.

Last England wicketkeeper to make two centuries in a series was Les Ames, the first in a long line of Kentish keepers to play for England, and that was in the 1930s.

I'm rather surprised that Alan Knott didn't do so, particularly as series in his day were of five matches. Doing it in a three-match series is remarkable.

Cook is in hospital. The ball got driven into his knee.

He came in to bat fairly low down the batting order, scoring just under 50 and not out, which did help to allow England to declare their second innings at 233-7 and setting Sri Lanka a target of circa 350 to win in what is left of the fourth day and all the fifth and final day.

Bad day for the Lancashire v Nottinghamshire Royal London Cup match at Blackpool Stanley Park, 33 Overs Bowled, Tom Smith out for a Duck, but a wonderful partnership between Alviro Petersen and Luke Proctor , then the rain came and got heavier and was eventually abandoned, but thankfully I had the sense to go home.

Shame about the weather. Looking at the scores, Tom Smith made a 16-ball duck, which is almost unheard of in this day and age in limited overs matches. Nick Compton has a blood brother,:)

I was a big Knotty fan, but he was nowhere near the Bairstow quality as a batsman. A complete eccentric in every way!

Womens Third Twenty20 International

England 170-5 (20 overs)
The England openers Lauren Winfield with 63 (1 x 6 / 9 x 4) and Tammy Beauman with 55 (1 x 6 / 4 x 4) put on an opening stand of 108 in only 75 balls to lay a good foundation to the innings.

Pakistan 113-7 (20 overs)

England win by 57 runs and the Twenty20 series.

Pakistan weren't much opposition but it has certainly been fun watching the England Women racking up big scores (the sorts of scores you'd find competitive in the men's game even!).

Anyway, back in the real world following the Political sideshow of the last few weeks, I'm looking forward to the Test series with Pakistan which opens tomorrow. I'm not confident of an England win, Pakistan generally spring a few surprises!

Pakistan, when 134-4, were in a bad position, so a middle order stand by Mishbah (110 not out with 18 x 4) and Shafiq (73 with 12 x 4) took the score along to 282 before two further wickets fell to Woakes at the very end of the days play.

Woakes bowling return was 18 - 6 - 45 - 4, very Anderson-like.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Day 2 started with Pakistan moving on to 310, then they lost their last four wickets quickly and were all out for 339.

Woakes' innings bowling return was 24 - 7 - 70 - 6.

England again, unlike the recent England women's openers, could not set a good opening stand and Hales quickly departed, dismissed for 6. However Cook led the way with 81 (12x 4) before being dismissed and no-one else made a 50 and England gradually lost their way moving from 118-1 to being currently 232-7, still 107 behind.

Shah made most of the inroads with bowling figures of 23 - 5 - 58 - 5

Michael Carberry has been diagnosed with cancer.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/36798903

the Big Big Cheese said:
England batsman Michael Carberry has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumour, his county Hampshire have confirmed.

The 35-year-old was sent for tests after missing this week's County Championship match against Warwickshire because he felt unwell.

He will have more examinations before receiving treatment.

Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove said: "I would like to send him and his family our very best wishes at this very difficult time."

Left-hander Carberry missed an England Performance Programme tour in late 2010 and part of the 2011 season because of blood clots on a lung.

He averaged 28.75 in six Tests for England, the most recent of which was against Australia in 2014.

I wish him a full and speedy recovery, and I am sure that I will not be alone in doing so.

I hardly ever get to see cricket in the flesh these days, and the last match I saw was Surrey v Hants in the old Sunday League at Whitgift School, Croydon. I missed the first few overs, having driven from Cornwall, but saw Shane Warne take a wicket with the first ball I witnessed, then a further two in the same over (only time I ever saw Warne). Anyway, Carberry virtually overtook the Surrey score on his own, with seven sixes out of the ground (I was worried for my car parked outside!) - he played originally for Surrey, and comes from Croydon, so was probably proving a point. I've followed him ever since, and wish he had played more test cricket. I'll certainly join you in your good wishes for a full and speedy recovery for Michael.

NatWest T20 Blast

Leicestershire 207-3
Pettini 76 (4 x 6 / 5 x 4)
Delport 68 (6 x 6 / 2 x 4)

Lancashire 198-4
Petersen 103 not out (4 x 6 / 10 x 4)

With the gap only being 9 runs at the end, the bowing figures of the Lancashire bowler Edwards of 3-0-48-1 (16 runs average per over bowled) looks damning...<(

Day 3 of the test match mirrored day 2 in that the batting side soon lost all their remaining wickets and England were all out for 272, 67 runs adrift of Pakistan. Good bowling return by Yasir of 29 - 6 - 72 -6.

In their second innings, at the resumption of the final session Pakistan after 61 overs were 170-6, extending their lead to 237.

Again a good bowling spell by Woakes with 13 - 5 - 29 -3 so far.

England are going to have to play the legspinner a darned sight better in the 2nd innings than in the first if they are not to be thrashed.

Lancashire are missing Ashwell Prince's batting and his partnerships with Petersen.

I will never forget their stand against Glamorgan of 501 in the County Championship match at Colwyn Bay in recent history when they came together with the score at 104-2 and were not parted until the score read 605-3, which allowed Lancashire to win that match by an innings and plenty:-
Petersen 286 with 2 x 6 and 35 x 4
Prince with 261 with 7 x 6 and 35 x 4

.

I've watched more of this test than usual as I've been a bit under the weather, but have thoroughly enjoyed it. A proper Test match. I love watching their leg spinners, Yasir Shah the latest in a long line, that started - for me -with Intikhab Alam. My favourite, however, was Abdul Qadir.
England's batting -Cook and Root apart - was definitely not convincing against Yasir, especially the middle order. Woakes played him well tho' (is there anything he can't do at the moment?) as did Moeen before he was unlucky enough to get two yellows.

Yasir Shah has 82 test wickets in his 13th test match, with the possibility/probability of more in the second innings. No bowler in test history has had such a start, not even Clarrie Grimmett or Murali.

Glad you mentioned Inti - I saw him play quite a few times, simply because the Oval was much nearer my home than Canterbury, my Kent team's home. Overseas players were a tremendous boon to the county game imo, many became really attached to their counties and the supporters reciprocated. Inti was a Surrey favourite for many years.

Now England should take a risk and play Rashid - if it's in place of Mooen, so be it. He is almost as capable of a big score, and more likely to take wickets I feel.

All England need to do now, is play super-defensive and bat at 1 run an over. It's boring to watch, but the only way we will win this game without taking risks and losing wickets. One thing we have got is time on our side, so it's wise to use it
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Two wickets left and down the tail.

196-8. May as well hand Pakistan the win this evening and take tomorrow off.

Our Batting is just not up to the task
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
207 all out.

England needed to bat long in this test match, especially in the 2nd innings, but they failed.

We only needed to go at one run an over. We left it until 6 wickets down to change to that approach and by then it was too late.

A new approach is needed on Friday. Slow and steady wins the race. We are not playing Sri Lanka

Pakistan beat England by 75 runs, while Afghanistan beat a full-strength Ireland side by 79 runs in their ODI.

In the county championship Aneurin Donald not only scored his first century for Glamorgan but went on to 234 runs, equalling Ravi Shastri's world record of scoring a double century in 123 balls. Of course, the Colwyn Bay ground is small, but congratulations to a very Welsh-sounding batsman.

What I would like to see for Old Trafford

1. Cook
2. Hales
3. Root
4. Borthwick (replaces Vince)
5. Ballance
6. Bairstow
7. Stokes (replaces Finn)
8. Woakes
9. Rashid (replaces Ali)
10. Broad
11. Anderson (replaces Ball)

Vince gets dropped for failing to preform and replaced with a Batsman/Spinner suited to Old Trafford conditions. Ali gets dropped for Rashid, especially with Ali not preforming with the bat. Stokes selected to bolster batting line up as well as a bowler. Woakes has done OK at 8. Finn has not preformed to the standard, Ball has done OK, but not quite good enough.

Also it gives you two spinners and four quicks, without weakening the batting line up.

I did note that Jimmy Anderson was not selected to play in that Test Match for reasons given, but he is currently playing for Lancashire in the 4-day County Championship match against Durham.

His bowling return of 22-7-58-3 in the Durham 1st innings does not look like he was lightly used. Has anyone any thoughts on this?

He has recovered from injury. Was injured at time of selection for the test but was fit to play when selected to play for Lancashire. International test sides are picked before county pick theirs

Anderson is only playing 2 days apparently.

I suspect Jake Ball may be a one-test wonder.

He did score 155 in the second test against Sri Lanka! He seems to be the fall guy for many pundits...purely it seems on the basis that he is not Graeme Swann.
