I have one behind me. It carries mainly freight but also GC and Northern services, as well as ECS workings for GC, Northern, TPE, XC and VTEC.

About a 35 minute walk, 10 minute bus ride (if one turns up:roll:) from Hemel Hempstead.

About 25 yards from the disused Hemel Hempstead to Harpenden, locally known has the Nickey Line.

Anyone live ABOVE a railway line? Loads of places lie above the tube - think the youth hostel @ Golder's Green is right above - you can hear and feel the trains below! But a main-line train, maybe tunnelled below you?

I live near a railway line used for freight, but I don't have a good view of it.

About half a mile from the WCML. It's quite pleasing being able to hear freight trains rumble by every night.

About a 150 metres from Cowley Bridge junction on the Crediton side. I can see the trains from the top of the garden and from a couple of rooms in the house, can hear it well too obviously.
When the railway got washed away a couple of years ago you could see our house from the overhead helicopter shots. One of the kids ran out to wave at the helicopter, tripped and fell over and was worried that they'd show it on the news bless her :)

About a meter from the depot fence, 20 meters from the nearest siding, and 40 meters from the nearest mainline. Can't actually see anything except odd flashes through the evergreen hedge though, and hear surprisingly little. There's usually about one freight a day that you can feel/see the lights shaking though.

About a mile, I live at the top of the hill and the railway is at the bottom! The line almost curves round the house though, so at night, you can hear a train come from the north, go silent for a couple of seconds as it goes through the tunnel, then hear it again as it goes out of the south end of the town!

Once, a long time ago, close enough to see the sooty smoke over the surrounding buildings. Eat your heart out, shame I never experienced the 'joy of steam' unlike my father. Give me an electric train any day!!

Currently about a mile away. I can hear train horns and the odd bit of track rumble on a still day.

Previously I lived about 150m from Lancaster Station and could feel the freight trains (via vibrations, not with my hand) at night.

And again at Carnforth about 100m from the WCML where I could hear the kettles at the WCRC building up steam in the early mornings, pacer squeal from the Leeds branch and freight trains clearly.

I live about 30 minutes by foot (eight by bus) away from Colchester Town station. If the wind's blowing the right way however, I can hear the occasional horn from the Sunshine Coast Line - about 1.4 miles away.

Close enough that we can hear some of the trains passing if the prevailing weather is good enough. Over the summer, there was one evening I was stood in our bathroom and the window was open and I heard what sounded like a locomotive passing - a quick check on RTT revealed an ECS railtour!

5 minute walk from liskeard station. As the crow flies I'm closer to Moorswater viaduct, and when my neighbour prunes his trees can see passing trains from my upstairs Windows.

I don't hear the normal trains but when something different passes I hear it, I guess I subconciously blank out HSTs and 150/3s by now!

About 5km west, 4km north and 8km south. Around 500m from each of two former lines (now paths).

I live approximately one and half miles from Richmond station but as nothing of interest runs through that part of SW London I don't miss anything.

However, my sister in law lives in Dent Dale and has a great view of trains running over Arten Gill viaduct. Lucky thing!

c.600 feet from Fenny Stratford station. I cant see anything as the line is below road level and buildings block out most sound.

Less than 200 meters; cycling takes 6 minutes to Groningen (main station), Netherlands.

About 500m - can glimpse the trains through the lineside trees and hear the 153/156/170s from the garden. Nearest station is 4.5 miles away.

Not a Mainline, but 0.5 Miles (9 Min Walk) To the Severn Valley Railway.

Just down the end of the road from me, Can normally here the locomotives easily as well. Especially for the Country Park Halt and various crossings.

If Mainline then about 13 Miles (31Mins) To Kidderminster or 21.7 Miles (48Mins) To Wolves for Direct trains to London (Euston), Scotland etc.

I'm a 10 minute steady walk from the station in my village, Whitwell (WWL), a 5 minute walk to a bridge over that line.
I can see the coloured lamp posts and shelter roof and the footbridge from my bedroom window and on a quiet day you can hear a 156 leave the station. With the wind blowing this way I have caught the odd bit of announcement.

An industrial unit I used to occupy was about 12 feet from the southbound line of the same track between Mansfield and Sutton Parkway, there was a crossing just out the back of our place. Sadly a cyclist was hit by a train there one afternoon a few years back and whilst emergency services used the access road on the other side I had swarms of press and general nosey people parking up outside and wanting to sneak through the gate (which remained locked). Though I did let the BBC in and through the Fire exit which backs out on the path next to the crossing.

I live very close to Walton Street crossing.

My grandparents on my mother's side used to live in the old station house at Stallingborough - remember all the trains passing at all hours of the night as a child. Local signal box used to let me go and watch them from time to time in exchange for a bag of jelly babies!
