Also re last nights episode I agree customer facing roles should expect some conflict and difficult customers. But sometimes the unnecessary rudeness of the general public baffles me. The guy in the pin stripe suit moaning about getting to Heathrow. No please or thank you when given the appropriate information. I would probably lose my job after a week telling someone to do one.

He was a fairly innocuous one, there's a lot worse out there. I've had other passengers remonstrating with irate passengers like that about their behaviour.

Is it just me as My5 will not now play episode 5, it's present on the site but just won't open and play. Anyone else having the same problems?

Poor XC fare dodger at Reading getting caught and refusing to buy a ticket on board.

Whats to bet that first person featured (the young lad trying to present a receipt as evidence he purchased a ticket) purchased a ticket from Reading West, Theale or Earley to reduce his fare?

He looked to me like he might have been something of an attention seeker, drawn like a moth to a flame at the sight of the camera...

I agree with your overall point though. I guess one thing that could be said is that the polite passenger (and I'm sure there were a few) doesn't make for such good television.

Didn't the man who got off the XC service at Reading mention the word 'split?'

If so, he might be referring to split ticketing.

Aye, probably was going to split at somewhere along the route to avoid paying the "XC" premium, depending where he was hoping to travel to. [i.e. the price jumps for a XC priced Southampton - Oxford ticket compared to a GWR priced Southampton - Reading ticket]

If that was the case, surely the guard should have sold him the appropriate ticket to his onward journey?

We got snippets, the XC conductor was insisting he joined at Southampton Central a supposedly barriered station without a ticket. " I'm not paying 95" was uttered which as he got off at Reading and the anytime day return from Southampton is 20.70 it was a bit hard to fathom.

I suspect he was removed at Reading but he wanted to travel further where ~ £95 would be the anytime single. Probably boarded at Southampton Airport as that hasn't got barriers but who knows what the story was. My guess would be Wolverhampton

My understanding is that there's no requirement for a guard to sell 'split tickets' on board a train.

If one wants to take advantage of splitting your tickets, one should obtain them all before travelling - certainly for journeys on a single train where one doesn't change.

Bet he was trying to travel to Birmingham or somewhere similar.

According to the help pages of the My5 website the error code means that the media is missing. Is each new episode going to be on the My5 player for a day after broadcast then vanish until about a week after broadcast?

I feel your question is more appropriately directed to Channel 5 than RailUK.

The guy refused.. and then got aggressive. Not much more the guard could do if he was refusing to pay.

Given that Day Returns and Singles are easy to split on XC if your going any distance I imagine the Conductors are under strict instructions not to split. The guy was trying to ask for splits at one point. Pay when challenged and then make a fuss about split ticketing in the hope staff cave in or you can make a get away -its a delaying tactic. I have heard of a person who tried this kicking off about rip off rail fares etc and was sold two singles that were more expensive than than the original point to point single- The Conductor was seen walking away with a very big smile!

Go to the station. Buy your tickets (split if you want). Get on the train. Show your tickets on request.

Simple.

And don't hide in the Gents.

Channel 5 are useless. Can't even watch the thing.
Indeed, I have been completely unable to get Channel 5's player to play me anything other than the first frame of the program (or first frame of the advert preceding the programme) in any browser I have, even after disabling all adblockers and script blockers, accepting all cookies, etc.

Channel 5's player has been a pain in the bahookie. The web version worked well for ages, then suddenly denied me access because I didn't have Silverlight. Now it lets me play stuff again. Surprisingly, the my5 app via Chromecast works quite well, and without adverts too.

The Channel four one was giving me that problem a few weeks ago.

Fortunately the channel 5 one was working today.

Another scene showing incompetency in NR was when the controlled explosion happened, GW signalling centre told TVSC that no trains at 3.30pm for the controlled explosion to take place, what happens? TVSC let a HST and slow stopper through the section and 'misheard' - sorry but if you stand back and do a thorough risk assessment, if alarm bells don't ring then I don't know what as just like the data link failure, this was another slip up by NR, and it could have been a catastrophic one, there's a reason why they were told not run any trains when the explosion happens.

Please remember that you only heard a small percentage of what ACTUALLY happened, so I think you are jumping to some very large conclusions in making that accusation.

What are the chances of the series being released on DVD once all episodes have been broadcast?
