I always used to prefer forward facing, left hand side. for some reason I like to see the people on the platforms.
But these days, I just prefer any single seat. So glad that GWR have put more of these in 1st Class. so much nicer to have a little section all to yourself, and good legroom too

Are the GWR single first class seats similar to those on VTEC? You mostly have to share a table with another single seat.

Forward facing, window, airline (as long as there's good legroom!). Single seat is even better, but a first class one rather than opposite the toilet!

317s are a special case, where the best seat is always one of the two airline pairs under the pantograph with a ridiculous amount of legroom!

PTSO or platform depending on the weather
Obviously it depends on the rolling stock and journey undertaken but usually, forward facing, right hand side at a table so I can do stuff, yet have a good view out of the window when needed

If I'm travelling long-distance with family, advance first, table seat and quiet coach

Forward facing, window, airline, left hand side, unless notable scenic views mean the right is better

This generally where I like to sit on the train, except I prefer to get a table seat if one is available.

For me it's forward facing, window and airline. While I don't mind sitting either side of the train, I do tend to sit on the left more often than the right, if the train has forward facing seats on the left (GN 387s don't have many). In first class, I also prefer the single seats, which are thankfully fairly common on VTEC's Mk4 sets.

Any seat whereby I’m not next to it opposite someone. Used to love going work outside peak times, almost a whole 8 car 357 to myself

If travelling on my own, I avoid tables, as at any moment you may get surrounded by a family of three and suddenly you feel like you have walked into someone else’s front room at sat on their sofa.

Yep, I know that feeling!

Forward, right-hand side window (odd exceptions like the South Coast), airline if alone, table if with someone.

Yep and because I don't know them, I can't stretch my legs like I would if my misses was opposite. Normally we'd move our legs to a position where both our legs are stretched. Being tall, not stretching legs on long journies can be awful.

You'd prefer to sit in one of those back-to-back airline type seats ?

My favourite on Virgin WCML in first class is seat two at rear of coach still got a good view but relatively quiet but I don't mind a single seat at a table you can meet some very interesting people, in standard as long as I have a seat by the window I am okay preferably in the quiet coach.

Airline style, forward facing, on the right. I will make exceptions, if the train is dead I will take a table if I get the feeling the train is going to stay relatively until I get off. I once got a pretty much empty Northern 156 from Lime Street to West Allerton. Just before the train left a man and a woman in suits got on and sat facing me across the table, they then proceeded to take over the entire table with lap tops and paperwork. Seriously, the rest of the front carriage had about two people on it.

I'd have asked them to move their stuff, at least so you could share the table.

GWR airlines. Chocolate and cream livery. Compartments too.
I like the sound of it.

Regarding my fellow passengers I was tempted but was only on the train for ten mins. I just couldn't understand the mentality. The carriage was empty. I felt like I was in a job interview. Ha ha.

Facing forward, middle of the carriage. Preferably on the side with the view, but without the sun in my eyes. Table not airline (for legroom, or I may need to work, in which case a power supply also needed).
Also prefer the carriage to be relatively quiet (no screaming kids, noisy headphones, overloud conversations).

Forward facing, window, airline... ideally right hand side but as others have said it does to some extent depend on the route and what is visible. I do also try to be at the back end of the carriage if I can as well because looking down the length of the carriage gives an illusion of higher speed - not completely sure why, but I think it's due to a visual effect caused by seeing the movement through more windows.
