Just wondering...

As a train driver, if you was due to work over the weekend but your toc had planned engineering works throughout the weekend. What happens in term of work? Paid and Laid off?

Well where I am your job would either be amended to take the works into account or the job would be cancelled and you would revert to spare at the same times of the original diagram.
You wouldn't be laid off.

'laid off' has a quite specific meaning in such discussions

as the other reply said the TOC would have three Options

1. a revised rota to fit services that were operating
2. ask you to report to your usual ( or agreed alternative) place of work to be a 'spare' / 'standby' or carry out other reasonable management requests ( i suspect that Conductors/ guards / train managers / RPI or other customer services staff might be asked to reinforce station staff if there was loads of disruption due to the works )
3. stand you down to a on call status but still pay you

Generally means far too much time in taxis, coaches or buses to get the driver to a point where they can work trains.

Well option 1 is the only one my TOC does.

On LU the duties will be rewritten. This may result in people travelling (in work time) to and from another location on their line to carry out work, or sitting spare. If spare, again they may be instructed to travel to another location so that they may be more useful, or they may simply sit spare at their home depot - in which case it's an opportunity for management to carry out P&D interviews and the like (although bear in mind on a weekend there won't be so many managers about!). Drivers may also be granted odd leave days.

Where Sunday is not part of the working week, you can be told you're "not required" to do your "booked" (or whatever the terminology used locally is) Sunday. Exactly why nobody gets into bother for not doing the Sunday when they choose, it's non pensionable/contractual.

At my TOC and my depot it would be:

1. Revert to spare (least likely)
2. Diagram modified (start time altered by up to 60 mins and diagram extended by up to 60 mins).
3. Diagram cancelled and given another diagram provided it fits the parameters in 2 above.

My TOC are quite happy to put you in a taxi for an hour each way to go do something else somewhere else.

Another TOC local to mine have allowed drivers to stay at home during engineering works at the weekend as their whole route has been affected.

Generally job cancelled or STP so that youbhave different work... usually works out that a nice job turns in to a very bad job at our TOC

Nothing good at our depot. Any decent jobs usually get extended to cover taxis to where ever trains are operating to/from

surely for (long term) planned enginerring works the rostering takes care of this anyway?

I would point out that a TOC doesn't do engineering, Network Rail does but.....

On the last load of engineering work in the Severn Tunnel I worked half the booked turn (the train journey was extended by an hour so I was relieved half way) and then was taxiid back to the depot after ending up on the other side of the water.

I'm a Guard, however at our place they generally give us work that is Diverted and STP (Short Term Planning.)

However, recently with the Liverpool Blockade and all trains terminating at Manchester Victoria they have been giving us STP diagrams with a longer break at Manchester Victoria.

For example,
Last week I booked on at York 0943.
1P65 - 1004 York - 1058 Middlesbrough
5P74 - 1100 Middlesbrough - 1155 Middlesbrough
1P74 - 1157 - Middlesbrough - 1409 Manchester Victoria
Break 35
Prepare Train
1E47 - 1832 - Manchester Victoria - 1943 York
Book off at 1953

Nearly every job has been SPT similar to this with just the Liverpool portion removed, giving a large break and a waste of resource.
