Gather, from a video on Facebook, there was a serious fire (‘explosion’) on a Merseyrail unit this morning. Do not have any details or corroboration.

According to Merseyrail it was as a result of ice on the conductor rail.

Looks similar to an incident last winter where similar arcing occurred due to a build up of snow around the shoe gear.

The weather last night was sub-zero, followed by light rain from about 6am. This froze onto the conductor rail. Gave quite a show on my train, as well.

explosion on Merseyrail train
The fire service arrived within six minutes to tackle the blaze between two carriages.

This shocking video shows an explosion on a Merseyrail train which caused delays this morning.

There have been no reported injuries but passengers on a service from Kirkby to Fazakerley were asked to move to the front of the train at around 6.42am.

Crews from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service were on scene at 6.50am.

A statement from the fire service said: "Two fire engines are in attendance, as well as the search and rescue.

On arrival, crews found a small fire between two railway carriages. Crews are using dry power extinguishers and CO2 extinguishers to put out the fire.

"All passengers have been moved to the front of the train. There have been no injuries.

"As a result of this incident, the train line has been closed and delays are expected throughout the morning. Please check before you travel."
