Would Manchester Central have much use today?

Closing that entire section of Metrolink will have dire efects on south Manchester. The Airport will lose it's link as well.

I did state that those stations would be compensated for by a heavy rail shuttle service, as was there in the first place. Train and tram connections for the Airport available at Deansgate, a short walk from Central. Also East Didsbury low level if the stop is converted to a new station.

repair the Castlefield viaduct?
That looks beyond hope to me, its in a heck of a mess. Its going to have to come down one day, but it'll be very disruptive and dangerous

It'll be better to restore it for asthetic reasons than turn it into a rail bridge.

Keep every stop? So it'll be a tram-train, which is just as expensive as a train?

I think a similar thing to what was there before line closure would do - so normal rail stations at Chorlton, Withington and West Didsbury and an interchange with the Airport line at East Didsbury.

As for Castlefield, it is still in one piece, so repairing it will be hardly insurmountable.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England

There is also the matter of the Manchester Metrolink line in process of construction to the intu Trafford Centre to add to the equation, once completed, that will pass through the Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop, that will offer through routes direct into the core of the city and beyond northwards, which once completed, will see tram services from Manchester Airport, East Didsbury, Altrincham, Media City UK, intu Trafford Centre and Eccles passing through Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop.

I cannot understand how anyone charged with the running of the Manchester Metrolink tram network, those using the existing tram lines as a mode of transport, or the varied users of the Manchester Central complex, can even give such a retrograde step proposed by this somewhat strange desire the time of day.

Before we know it, there will surface ever stranger demands for the commercial re-openings of both the Rochdale and the Ashton canals linking to the commercial reopening of the Bridgewater Canal as a 21st century mode of transport at the cost of current city core transport modes.

Frankly I think it's ridiculous that Building Regulations don't require rings for tying up horses, or troughs for their feed and water. What are we expected to do with our horses in town, just let them roam the streets all day?
