So if I buy a first class 1 week season ticket between Golf Street and Barry Links (£10.80) then technically I would have free unlimited first class travel for the Saturday and Sunday my ticket is valid for.

https://www.scotrail.co.uk/about-scotrail/news/we-are-sorry

Season ticket holders, accompanied by one extra person, on routes most affected by traincrew shortages are being offered travel anywhere on ScotRail services for six specified weekends in March, April and May 2019*. Routes included in the offer are set out in the Question and Answer notes below. The offer excludes weekends when there are big events happening across Scotland’s seven cities. The offer weekends are:

Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 March 2019
Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 March 2019
Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 April 2019
Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 April 2019
Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 April 2019
Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May 2019

It will be interesting to see what happens (regarding the guards/ticket examiners/gateline staff), as I suspect there will be a few others like yourself buying cheap weekly season tickets to benefit from having free travel.

I think the best thing to do is print off the website and keep it on me. Best to prepare for the worst.

One would like to hope that with something like this, Scotrail will ensure that all staff who check tickets have been briefed on the policy.

would you not need to have held a valid season ticket at time off disruption to qualify ???

Yes.

Nope.

This has all been discussed before!

Obviously it would be sensible to buy a ticket for a journey which people would actually do as a daily commute, such as Camelon to Falkirk Grahamston for £18.60, but then Barry Links tickets are no less valid with the offer.

This is morally wrong of course, but if I was to buy the cheapest season possible, I could use it as a weekend rover all over Scotland on ScotRail?

Doesn’t say anything about that in the small print.

This offer is for anyone that has a season ticket during the valid days of free travel regardless or having one in the past or not

I was, in a way, expressing my amazement at it, and the fact that it'll be abused massively!
I doubt it, only a few fare-savvy people will take advantage of it. The average passenger won't even bother with this offer.

For the linked website:
Q: Who qualifies for this offer?
A: Valid season ticket holders for the following routes on the dates on which the offer applies
So you can buy a season ticket that'll be valid for these future weekends, and you'll qualify for the free travel.

A tiny handful of people getting travel at a cheap rate, who probably wouldn't have paid the hundreds of pounds for First Off Peak / Anytime tickets anyway, makes ScotRail a small amount of extra money and offers new or infrequent customers goodwill. A distinct and larger but still relatively speaking small group of people who have long-term season tickets and are as such some of ScotRail's most frequent and loyal customers making a few odd extra weekend journeys offers gets ScotRail a lot of extra goodwill.

Both are pretty much a win for ScotRail and only a limited number of the least busy weekend dates are included in the promotion. I don't see any drawbacks.

The only loss will be all the free food and drink that will be consumed with the first class ticket

An occasional cup of cheap coffee at wholesale prices - oooh expensive!
A can of coke, sandwich and biscuits on every service I bash will add up, not to mention the bacon rolls in the morning HST services. Spread across 2 days will most likely cover the cost, and then some, of the ticket.

Sorry to break it guys, but you'd only be on Standard away from your season ticket route - just asked ScotRail...

Where does it actually state that anyone can travel in First Class as part of this offer?

I was going to get something like a Greenfaulds - Cumbernauld weekly season when I do my weekend at the end of April (assuming Scotrail don't pull the offer)

It doesn't, but incase one assumed, I thought I'd get clarification

Indeed. It's just all the talk above about buying a weekly ticket then using it to effectively stock up on food, all of it is posted without any evidence it can be used in that way. Just waiting for someone to post now that they are taking a mate and expect to fill their rucksack as well.

Nipped it in the bud before people were charged for being in first..m

That should be in the Q&A not in a Tweet. Have Scotrail not issued a full list of T&C's?

They've issued T&Cs, but as far as I can see it isn't in them.

Also delay repay isn't applicable on routes travelled outside your season ticket's traditional validity.

That's sensible enough as this is a free "reward" for long-suffering commuters: what proportion of one's free ticket would one expect to be repaid?
