Waiting on Urmston station the other day for one of Northern's finest to Manchester. Two 30 + year olds (at a guess) were stood near the platform edge signalling to the driver of the through EMT in a pulling the toilet chain fashion. Then spent five minutes shouting about "top hornage"

I think the term for that kind of person is a tone w*****.

They may well be using the phone for other purposes (e.g. reading, listing to music, watch videos etc) and modern phones aren't too intuitive to put on silence (assuming you've remembered). RE:1 it may well be a known telesales number or work whom they don't want to speak too.

• The call is a spam call

• The sound that you hear isn't the call sound, but some other alert

The other week I saw a bloke in a suit try to get on a 387 at Cambridge by waving his hand in front of the (not illuminated!) 'Door Not In Use' light rather than pressing the button - he actually gave up and walked to the next set of doors which were open!

Scenario 2 could be that the call is from their doctor, and they don't want to discuss their medical test result in front of a train full of people (or similar).

Must admit the not answering does annoy me, especially if it's a loud and irritating ringtone. They let it ring for ages before finally fumbling around in their pocket, and then stare at it for another couple of rings before either answering or presumably declining the call.

Was on a HML train (not that the route is relevant, other than that it was busy) a while ago and someone sitting opposite me was conducting pay negotiations with a new hire over the phone. Personally I'd have thought that quite sensitive and not really suited to discussing in a full carriage.

There is an easy alternative solution to that one which doesn't involve forcing everyone else to listen to your ringtone, and which doesn't involve declining the call.

Decline the call then if answering at that moment is inconvenient, and (if not spam) ring them back at a suitable opportunity.

The OP was annoyed at people who get incoming calls and don't answer. I was giving reasons as to why that might be a reasonable thing to do.
