Is it possible to determine the booked rolling stock type using the headcode?

Forgive the ignorance, but is there a way to find out what type of train will run a specific service?

Both Meridians and 125s run on the Sheffield - London route and I'm intrigued to know which services use which train type.

I've got as far as getting headcodes for the services, but don't know if that helps me or not!

Pretty sure the HSTs only run on the Nottingham fast service, meridians run all others.

The booked traction shows on RTT - now I'm not one to refer people to it, but for East Midlands' long distance services, their booked traction is fairly accurate, so that might be an idea of where to look.

Nope. At least the first two departures on M-F from Sheffield are HSTs, along with the 07:37????? and a departure just after midday, with the Leeds services too

Booked Traction shown on RTT ? That is the Timing Load that is shown on RTT but in the case of "Inter City" Trains often can be the same

Yeah some of the Sheffield to London ones are 125s as well.

Thanks for the RRT tip, will see if I can deduce anything from there - I see if I search for tomorrow some do actual say "HST125" on them.

The HST diagrams have been posted above in post 3

Slightly off topic, but if you dont need to be in a rush to London, the 07:37??? from Sheffield to St. Pancras via Nottingham is a wonderful ride on a HST, and the cooked breakfast in First Class is amazing!

06:33 off Leeds, 07:24 Sheffield and 07:37 Chesterfield, it does indeed look lovely of you’ve got the time! Although I’m not a huge fan of EMTs HSTs myself, but Breakfast might just about compensate :D.

The booked traction shows on RTT - ..
The open data used by sites such as RealTimeTrains and Open Train Times does not include booked traction.

It does include timing load information, which - on some operators - can give a good indication of likely booked traction.

Not always! Had booked 222 services with HST timing loads before!

To answer the question in the thread's title - no. The headcode will only be an indication of train type, individual number, etc. The type of rolling stock will only have to fulfil these broad criteria, and not always even that - emergency stock substitutions will still have the same headcode.
