TVM 430 in-cab display

I've just been watching this video of the TVM 430 in-cab signalling display.

What I'm trying to get my head around is - how does it work, or what type of display is this? It's clearly not an LED or LCD, in fact it sort of looks like some kind of backlit cards or something.

Also, I'm guessing this is all done with screens on newer stock.

You’ve pretty much nailed it - these are specific “digits” with an optical device to display the various indicators.

I am SURE I saw a diagram somewhere on the internet, at some point in time, but I cannot put my hands on it.

And indeed the latest generation of displays uses a multipurpose screen.

Each digit of the indications are formed by an array of bulbs, each digit is in effect one bulb being illuminated with a image 'printed' on it, a different bulb is therefore required for each different digit / indictaion. New trains have LCD displays.
