A career as a signaller

I've just checked my contract that I received a couple of weeks ago and it says 28 days rising to 30 days after 10 years, but its more confusing than that it seems

Weeks of 5 turns (not necessarily of equal lengths) - 28 days leave
36 turns in 8 weeks - 25 days leave
Weeks of 4 turns (not necessarily of equal lengths) 22 days leave

I have no idea how that translates into 8 and 12 hour shifts - perhaps someone could shine some light on it!

Basically what LOM said...

A week of five turns i.e. if you regularly work five days a week e.g. Mon to Fri - so you get 28 days leave as you would expect.

The pattern I am on (8hr shifts) works out at 36 shifts worked over a eight week period (you don't count Sundays as they are overtime) - this gives you the 25 days referred to by LOM and in your contract.

Other shift patterns it depends on how many shifts per week (averaged out over the entire rotation of the full pattern) to give you your answer as per the formula in your contract.

Cheers for this.

Actually I looked at it again after I posted the comment, and it sort of made sense but what I forgot was that Sundays are overtime, and as you say, don't count!

Thought Panty was a Grade 2 signaller?
I really don't know. The advert (still on google if you search) was for a Crossing Keeper level one. I'd very happily take a Grade 2 Signaller position if offered!!! I read the box controls the token system up to Craven Arms. Perhaps there is a Signaller and a Crossing Keeper?

That is correct - the crossing keeper is based in the station building and operates the crossing at one end of the station (and I believe is a grade 1). Off the top of my head the signaller in the signal box at the end of the station is a Grade 3 but I’m not certain of that.

Have you been told what format the training will take bearing in mind the current circumstances?
I have joining instructions and an overview of what topics will be covered in each morning or afternoon, I think class size has been halved but that is all I know for now

27/4 Starters. Do you know when and where you are going to school?
I’ve been advised this morning that my course is now TBC, so it’s just a waiting game, but definitely not on next weeks course now. Can’t be helped in the current climate I guess and I’m sure they’ll get us going as quickly as is possible/safe.

Was advised that I’m unable to do a box visit due to distancing. E-learning was mentioned last week but I think there’s issues with that, I.e need to be on a NWR computer network to complete it. My LOM is sending me out some material to revise ahead of the course/school.

Hi - if you go to signal school, what expenses do NR pay for? I assume they pay for hotel accommodation but what about meals, travel to/from the school location etc.?

they pay for your evening meal at the hotel, usually £25 not including alcohol

lunch is provided at the training school, York was £5.50 a day and this was plenty.

breakfast is included at hotel

travel is paid for in advance by NR, You will given a ticket for the weeks journey to and from school in advance..

enjoy!!

Following interviews is it usually the hiring manager that contacts the successful candidates or is everything left to HR? Thanks

It can be either. I was called by the hiring manager to offer me the job but I've seen others on here have been offered the job by HR.

For me when I was an external candidate it was about a week after interview and HR informed me via email. But as an internal candidate it was the hiring manager who initially informed me I had been successful

Just got this email :

Unfortunately due to CV19 the number of people in signalling school classes have been reduced. This means that your start date for signalling school has been pushed back to 26th May .

My LOM sent me some materials to study too .

I also found the rule books on the rssb website . Google : GERT8000-TS1 Iss 13 ( https://www.jonroma.net/media/rail/opdocs/world/uk/GERT8000-TS1 Iss 13.pdf )

That can be useful on a tablet or smartphone .

Just got the email a couple of days ago telling me my applications for Montrose and Arbroath (relief) have been declined... Oh well - on to the next one when they are put up... Time, methinks, to revisit my answers to the questions and my CV!
