Afternoon all. Ultra noob alert.

Can one of you nice folk explain the signals on the far right? 223, 221, 222 and 218?

Am I right in thinking they are track-side signals for traffic going against the normal flow of that line - specifically being about to use a junction / set of points?

Also, similar with 225, but without a junction / points?

They are Ground Position Lights/Signals and are used to, as you correctly guessed, allow a train to shunt/reverse/head in the opposite direction and are protecting the points.

I don't know the area at all but 225 could be used to stop a train coming from 223 to then reverse back through 158 signal and onto the other route. Or 225 could be cleared to allow the train to carry on to 8801. Again, I don't know the area, that's just an assumption.

Many thanks for the info. Answers it all. I wonder if 225 is an old set of points? But yes, there are LOTS of freight movements there.

I think you might be making a connection between position lights and points where there isn't one. They might often tend to be near points due to their purposes, but aren't directly related to points, especially in the case of Limit of Shunts.

They may be provided for:
  1. Entry to a siding or yard
  2. Entry to an occupied platform
  3. For shunting purposes
In your example, all the 2xx signals all appear to be for shunting purposes.

I believe 225 is a Limit of Shunt signal. This will only show a red aspect and is there to demark the limit of which a train can shunt from either 221 or 223 in the wrong direction down the up fast. 221 and 223 allow the movement in the wrong direction down the up fast.

Ahh - I get it now. They are a visual indicator to a driver/engineer when the rear of the train is to the point where it may not be allowed to foul further almost? Completely clicked now :)
