Least popular journeys made between two stations served by a direct train? Based on tickets sold?

In my area I doubt there are many Apperley Bridge to
Kirkstall Forge tickets sold. Both are predominantly P&R stations for Leeds.

There might be a few sold to people walking the canal towpath- it's a nice length with a few tea rooms en route.

There's probably loads that don't have a single ticket sold in a year. Clifton to Meols Cop, Alsager to Peartree and Heald Green to Salwick can all be done on direct trains but I would be surprised if any tickets are sold between them.

Some of the rural stations can be popular with walkers and cyclists. I know Delamere, Hadfield and Smithy Bridge get people from various little towns all over travelling to them but I'm not really familiar with any of the ones you've mentioned.

Me too. Its a really pleasant walk from Five Ways station thro to Bournville Station along the canal. Done it many times.

I've always wanted to do it. How long does it take? I'm a pretty brisk walker.

Down here in South Wales, I wonder how many people travel one stop from say Tir Phil to Brithdir or somewhere

Apart from between pairs of lightly used stations on rural lines, probably stations on some of the “artificial” (I know, but I couldn’t think of a better word) routes concocted by bolting together pairs of routes either side of a big city to avoid dwell times in busy city stations. So up here, something like Walsden to Daisy Hill

Anywhere to Dovey Junction. I did the trip from Tywyn once when hitchhiking down the coast as a train was due the road makes a big loop inland. The conductor was very confused.

I must admit do get surprised by the amount of people who catch the train from Braintree to Braintree Freeport. The other way round is more understandable as I expect that many people who get on a down train at Freeport are actually going to London or Chelmsford/Witham etc, and just take the opportunity to sit on the train, especially in cold or wet weather. I've done the same at Nelson when travelling to Preston.

Totton > Redbridge? Pre-COVID I think it was down to one weekday service at 0614, no return possible.

It doesnt take that long, especially if you're a brisk walker. Five Ways to Bournville, ive done it in about 45 minutes. The tow path is very busy with both cyclists and pedestrians. Its very pleasant, especially late spring thro to mid autumn.

I expect that quite a few pairs of stations on the far north line get very few tickets sold between them

I'm surprised by that, I'd just walk along the canal!

Maybe not so much on a dark evening, especially if you are a lone female student. Some of Birmingham's canalside walks are not recommended to anyone alone for safety reasons - although that isn't one of them.

I worked at UoB for over a decade, sometimes I used to walk the canal path into the City Centre because it is a nice walk, but it was one beset by larger and larger numbers of cyclists over the years, most of which were responsible but a few of which were very much not so.

Dove Holes to Middlewood. Both normally served only every 2 hours and very limited numbers of direct trains.

Stansted Airport to Attleborough/Wymondham/Brandon.
Stansted Airport to Nuneaton.
Stansted Airport to Coleshill Parkway.

Not sure if there is still a direct train in the morning from Gloucester to Stansted Airport. If so that must bring up a few pairings that seldom have tickets sold between them.

Following on from the OP's original Cotswold Line journey, I'd suspect that journeys from Kingham to Ascott-under-Wychwood, Combe, or Finstock would be very good candidates for least popular journey; the stations are all really quite close together and whilst there's Ascott village, Kingham, Combe, and Finstock have very little to shout about!

What about the Caledonian Sleeper?

While it's theoretically possible to make a journey like Tulloch to Carstairs or Preston as a direct journey, I doubt anyone does it.

Doubt anyone uses the Carstairs sleeper stop? Id love to know the numbers.

For lines near me. Id say Thorntonhall to East Kilbride/Hairmyres.

Some of these journeys can easily be made on a Rover, and I suspect people will have done just that.

Should we rename this thread "Least sold tickets for routes?"

Saltaire to Shipley? So close that it wouldn't really be worth bothering with the train.

Likewise Ben Rhydding and Ilkley
