My father in law said just before the arrival of our 22:00 HST from London into Langley Mill tonight he caught sight of a diesel with a steam engine dead in tow passing through heading northbound?

Anyone have any information on what it was and where its going.......

I know Duchess of Sutherland went southbound through on Thursday, heading for Derby to pull The London Explorer on the 16th (Saturday) and all I can guess is that the Duchess has failed and being towed back to Butterley. Like I say though, just a random guess.

There was something mentioned yesterday(?) about a 37, I think, hauling a single BCK heading to pick up a kettle somewhere, could have been that?

The kettle would be 98834 with 57601 working 1Z67/1Z68 "The London Explorer, Sheffield to Kings Cross" WCRC charter.

Quite a number of charters on the GN today with 98834/57601, 47580/47826 via Hertford and a pair of 67s being busy - The 47s had a good trip, Norwich to Portsmouth Harbour....

I thought the London Explorer was hauled by Duchess of Sutherland, which according to UKsteam.info, was only steam hauled by The Duchess from Derby to Kings Cross, The Duchess travelled down to Derby from Butterley on Friday afternoon, SOUTHBOUND through Langley Mill http://www.uksteam.info/tours/t10/t1015q.htm

Whatever it was travelled NORTHBOUND through Langley Mill at about 21:50 on Friday night.

The Duchess returned northbound through Langley Mill on Saturday night at about 22:55 after returning from Derby after she left The London Explorer at Derby.

The Northbound on Friday night is still a mystery, unless I have misread something?

I have just noticed that the Duchess is listed as 98834 on some sites, so she will have passed through Langley Mill, like I say, southbound on Friday afternoon. UKsteam.info has the Duchess listen as 46233.

But the diesel/steam combo my father in law saw was travelling Northbound around 21:50 on Friday Night. The London Explorer was diesel hauled from Sheffield to Derby where the Duchess joined. http://www.uksteam.info/tours/t10/t1016e.htm
