377 503 /507 about to work 08:40 2R20 Charing Cross - Minister.
Witch is quite Unusual for 377 to work.

As they are normally on a London Victoria - Canterbury West .

While they are primarily associated with the Maidstone East line, it certainly isn't unknown for them to work out of Charing Cross, particularly during engineering work.

It would appear that Ramsgate is inaccessible today from the Canterbury direction, hence Dover route services terminating at Minster, meaning units have to be sourced from Ashford and Tonbridge.

Indeed they have been here before but on Hastings services.

Tho I don't often see them on the via Tonbridges.

It looks like an out and back diagram from Ashford which I guess makes it a relatively easy substitution for a 377.

However, I wonder if something has changed with 2W38 1129 Minster to London Charing Cross as it seems to have had a longer dwell at Ashford which might indicate a swap.

I'm pretty sure Class 377's aren't route cleared to run via Dover Priory. Could be remembering incorrectly though.

Class 377s are not cleared between Dover and Folkestone, therefore a 3 375 replaced the 8 377 from Ashford on 2R20. 2W38 was strengthened with an additional 4 375 at Ashford to bring the remainder of the diagram to 7 vice 8 car.

Ah thanks, I was wondering - there was a delay at Ashford on 2R20 0840 London Charing Cross to Minster and 2W38 1129 Minster to London Charing Cross which you have now explained.

I can't confirm for sure, but the fact I've seen them on a Folkestone Central peak terminator before would back that up. I can't see why they couldn't get clearance if needed though given they're almost identical to 375s and have the end doors that help in the event of a Shakespeare tunnel evacuation.

377s have also run Chatham Mainline stoppers occasionally, and I believe they also got put on the CHX-Ashford fast between Tonbridge and Ashford run (and an inbound peak working), after some 375s were reallocated to fit in with the class 466s losing their ability to run independently from December 2019. Covid though appears to have stopped that particular fast service running for now.

Its the tunnel between Folkestone Central and Dover Priory which is the reason why class 377's cant run to Dover Priory, I remember now. Not sure why the tunnel is an issue, but something about the tunnel prevents the class 377's from running via Dover Priory.

Typically if something about that tunnel stops trains running into Dover Priory via Folkestone it's evacuation problems. It maybe they haven't tested this on 377s, but as they have end doors I can't see why evacuating in that tunnel is a problem. 395s though can use it without that though as I believe some evacuation points were built into it just before the High Speed service commenced, but Networkers definitely are not cleared (but have and still do visit Dover Priory via Canterbury East).

I had not heard of this restriction on 377s before this thread.

So I asked on another forum.

377s have external bodyside CCTV cameras - and this difference is just enough to infringe the kinematic envelope on this section of line; 375s do not have this fitting.

EDIT: further, the restriction concerns Priory Tunnel not the cliff tunnels; the Sectional Appendix specifically refers to it. They have other restrictions elsewhere on SED, all over the place, now that I looked at the SA.
