Is there likely to be train disruption on Monday if England win the match on Sunday? For example due to train staff being unavailable or as a result of a decision from the Prime Minister to grant a holiday on Monday?

A public holiday won't be granted at this short notice.

I suspect there will be increased "sickness absence" and almost no rest day working volunteers, so yes, disruption.

I’d agree Sunday could be interesting. However, except where there’s the “Sunday outside the roster” arrangements, Saturdays tend to be worse when it comes to uncovered duties, due to falling at the end of the railway week, so there being a tendency to pinch coverage for the weekdays.

a decision from the Prime Minister to grant a holiday on Monday?

Why would the PM grant a holiday on Monday as a result of a football match?

As others have said Sunday afternoon/evening for TOCs with voluntary Sunday working might be an issue especially for fans travelling to and from the match.

Might be one for a seperate thread, but West Midlands railway has already been having crew shortage issues over the past couple of years, and this has got really, really bad on days when England has been playing. I expect they are relying on overtime to run the timetable?

GWR already pre-cancelling services for Sunday.

I would expect significant disruption on Sunday. TOCs reliant on RDW to cover Sundays are likely to fare the worst, but even then, there may be short notice 'sickness' cancellations.

It was bad enough on Wednesday with the semi-final so I would really avoid travelling on Sunday, if you can help it.

I agree, you can't say at the last thing Sunday night the day after will be a bank holiday. Did France do it in 1998??
What I am seeing, some non-railway related businesses are letting people start later or if they win they can have the day off. Some schools are starting at 10.30 too.

Going to be carnage on Sunday if travelling by rail
I'm working Sunday as I be travelling to Kent for work, if there's mass cancellations then it's ticket acceptance or rail replacement paid by the TOC be it buses or taxis.

Er... because he's a buffoon who will do almost anything if he thinks it'll improve his image? [/cynic]

It's apparently at least plausible, but not for this coming Monday:

... Asked whether he could declare Monday a bank holiday in the event of an England win, the prime minister said: “I think that would be tempting fate; let’s see what happens.”

His official spokesperson later added: “I don’t want to pre-empt the outcome of Sunday’s match. Clearly we want England to go all the way and win the final, and then we will set out our plans in due course.”

Downing Street sources suggested the timing of the match meant it would be much too late to give fans an emergency day off next Monday – but other options were being considered. ...

If England lose - there will be carnage , if England win - carnage (of a different order).

See some of the pictures of London the other night with idiots on double decker bus roofs etc. BTP and the Met must be dreading it - let alone other places. I suppose Sugar Loaf Halt might be a place to sit it out safely.

There's been quite a few occasions recently where rail replacements have been unobtainable

As if there hasn’t been enough disruption to work and education over the last year, all this fuss for a poxy football match! As a country we do seem to have priorities mixed up.

That's not my fault, TOCs should be able to run a service regardless if England win or lose at Wembley. If they were so concerned about not being able to operate a service then they should have advertised that a amended service may operate prior to the Euros starting.

I fully agree, yes it be good if England win but as a country our priorities are all wrong!

I know it's not your fault. There's a pandemic going on. And football. I'm just saying, not trying to blame you

I know, I'm just saying that the TOCs knew there was a chance that England might get though to the final so they should have taken steps to ensure they could still operate a service even if it's 1tph.

It's not like it's a new thing to them as pretty much whenever there's a major sporting event on, they suddenly have a shortage of staff...wonder why?

I'll still be going to bed at the same time, other half will up at 4am, I'll be up 6am.
Even if there was a bank holiday I wouldn't be boozing to all hours in the morning.
Maybe I'm getting old..
