Overcast sky in Exeter now, likely to be a sign of the approaching thunderstorm which was in Cornwall earlier.
The SW seems to have escaped the worst of the heat. Some rain fell around 13.00, sunny now with a breeze. BBC is saying 26 degrees now in Exeter.

Anyone know whats happened at Ealing? Has a track buckled? The Up Main line is currently blocked with trains being divered to the Relief line at Southall.
I think that was to do with the OLE. The counterweights were only about 10mm off the ground earlier (meaning that if the OLE were to sag much more it would no longer be tensioned correctly) so the P/way have been out there making some adjustments under a line blockage.

One would have thought that passengers had already had their journey affected if they had intended to use the ECML and were forced to use the WCML. This type of advice is completely unhelpful. Should passengers use Chiltern/GWR&XC instead?

No. They should follow the advice and avoid travelling by train altogether.

Am i the only one enjoying this weather?

Also quite liking it. I wouldn’t want to be at work, though. Or indeed doing any kind of physical work outdoors.

Given all these incidents I can't imagine the rail network is somehow going to be miraculously back to normal tomorrow surely?

The 2300 GNER service from London to York was cancelled last night. Did they put York passengers on the following Leeds service and then taxi from Doncaster/Leeds?

Nope! I'm enjoying the sun, getting some cycling done on much quieter roads, plenty of walking as well.
I have no interest in the hysteria/fear porn pedalled by many.

I'd hardly say warning about real dangers in temperatures this country has literally never seen before is hysteria.
Especially when we have already seen people dying (there's been quite a few cases of drowning in the last few days with people trying to cool down and I am sure hospitals will tell you the effects they are seeing from dehydration, heat and sun stroke etc - that stuff really is no joke!!) and infrastructure failing (to bring it back on topic - the railways obviously, there's loads of examples in this thread alone, but also roads being deformed etc).

Am i the only one enjoying this weather?
Depends where you are and what you are doing.
I'm in Bristol where the outside temp hit 36 degrees yesterday and 34 degrees today, which has meant my flat hit about the same. And I am working.
If you are in a part of the country that has been cooler, or in a home that is cooler, or aren't working at all, then maybe I can see the enjoyment.
But if you are working, or travelling (this thread has numerous examples of the issue the heat is causing with the railways and other infrastructure), or in one of the hotter parts of the country, or have to deal with a home environment that heats up quickly etc etc, then it is very much not enjoyable. And that is before you consider the health risks.

Fallen to 23c on Somerset coast where the rail has moved in.

Quite a sharp divide as 32c only about 20 miles further East

Dark clouds are approaching me (on Wilts-Somerset border), so getting close to end of hot weather

This photo, featured on BirminghamLive, shows a train evacuation taking place just outside of Birmingham New Street, after the OLE ‘fell’ on the 323.

London City just popped up in top spot at 35c now.

But yeah Heathrow is hot. Any reason why airports tend to get the hottest temperatures? Is it due to the abundance of tarmac? Or the flat land? Or just they have the most weather data available?
Combination of tarmac, air-con and hot aero-engines, and no trees. Urban environment always hotter than rural.

Another person missing this afternoon, off the beach at Clacton, 6 got into trouble, 5 saved, last one they cannot locate, all emergency services on site.

Is that part of the problem with people in areas that are lower, not understanding the effects a few miles away where it maybe 12 or more degrees higher.

The mercury hit 35 degrees here in Hebden Bridge at 13 22. Reduced Calder Valley service still running with some trains delayed.
So long as that rather nice Cafe on the platform of Hebden Bridge Station is open, all is well!.

ps the Cafe has tables on the platform and has a number of devotees of railway enthusiasts, worth a morning breakfast / lunch visit

Far too hot for my liking, but I'm sort-of enjoying it anyway - if we have to have such hot weather, it feels satisfying to break lots of records while we're at it :)

No they boarded a very late 2100 Kings Cross to Newcastle which left after midnight.

Ecml blocked Newcastle to Edinburgh, 1S93 Lumo has wires down around it just north of Manors station and no power or air on.
People started self evacuating and now passengers are being transferred to Northern’s 2N21.

Update** wires seem intact but likes won’t reenergise

If that really have no alternative then I guess yes.

Just a reminder that this thread is for rail related issues. Other aspects of the current arrival of hell on earth in the UK would be better suited to the other thread which can be found here.

Avanti now withdrawing all services for the rest of the day.
I wonder if history will view the ”over cautious“ east coast view of total closure. now we have the other route for valid reasons that are needing to stop running with passengers miles away from where they want to be. I guess we will see.

It is....but, unfortunately one of the two wonderful ladies who run it has been ill for several months and the other one is struggling to keep it going on her own. It's currently only open 07 00 - 13 00 Mondays-Fridays and unable to provide full meals. However breakfast rolls - including veggie options - are still available. It's one of my regular haunts when videoing freight trains for mu YouTube channel.
