To be fair from tomorrow the temperature is meant to drop significantly (down to 27C, which is still relatively warm!) and some parts of the country will see the heat-related downpours or decrease in temperature earlier then others.
Makes me wonder, at what forecast temperature will Network Rail and/or TOCs start similar ‘exceptional temperature’ measures after these two days?

I’m rather relieved to have got out of the North East when I did this morning and made it to the Highlands! The Highland Main Line seemed to be running without any issues earlier, and the air con on the HST was working very well.

Get to Sheffield in time for a much delayed Sheffield-London, and after a crew finally shows up the driver refuses to take it as the train has been sitting in the sun for a while and the cab is apparently too hot.

Sounds like a sensible decision to me. You’re lucky it was a Derby man who signed via Beighton…

Hahaha… Sounds like a right militant to me who was happy to lean on the rule book to keep himself cool wat the expense of the passengers - you know, those people who actually pay for the railway - who were left standing on a sweltering platform with not much shade, no breeze, and no air conditioning, wondering when the next train might run.

Driving a train in a sweltering cab is no joy. Risk of concentration loss and incident. With no driver depot as Sheffield I guess the driver would prefer to have taken the train as it would be going in the right direction whether a Derby or London driver.

Managed to hold out yesterday without a single cancellation :) And it is the only thing running today through Ely, too. Will probably all fall over now that I've mentioned it :) but impressive either way.
Yes - terminating at Ely due to OHL issues Waterbeach.

Bridge bash by a boat at Somerleyton, Norwich - Lowestoft suspended.

What you fail to realise is a driver is potentially one incident away from the end of their career and also potentially something more serious

If they had an incident and cited the hot cab the first thing they’d be asked is why they didn’t they refuse to take it

Also good customer service could also be described as they got to their destination safely

Birmingham New Street is a complete toilet as far as train services are concerned.

There is nothing, and I mean nothing, moving in or out of the station, due to overhead line damage.

Needless to say, the West Midlands Metro has gone down the pan as well, with services running with severe delays, after being suspended for a time between Wednesbury and Handsworth for the same reason.

The fans are going ten to the dozen on the poor things but they are like a fridge inside. The relief on peoples faces as they walk onboard is a joy to see.

Avanti now withdrawing all services for the rest of the day.
I’m surprised it took this long.

Up in North Yorks the temp has dropped from a high of 37.1 down to 29.4. I am hearing trains running about 1/2 mile away. Looking at RTT seems to be running OK. a few late by a few minutes. Feels fresher. Quite a lot of thin cloud so less heat from the sun.

Happens a few times each season & not surprising when you see some of the idiots navigating the Broads. All clear & Wherry Line to Lowestoft reopened.

You can't even open the cab window on a 222. We've had drivers collapse at the controls of their trains with heatstroke before, that's not great service either.

Well that's a stupid post if I ever heard one. What would you say if he took the train and then had an accident because the heat was affecting him. What if the heat made him ill? Driver's (or any staff) are not robots and can be affected by heat like anyone else.

These horrible fires that have started in London are going to mean even more disruption, especially to the east where those horrible scenes are being broadcast on sky news.

Drivers shouldn't be taking such services in this heat.

Not seen it mentioned here but a line side fire is affecting London Victoria services on the Brighton mainline. I don't know where the fire is.

Good on the driver for standing up for what's right.

Ecml blocked Newcastle to Edinburgh, 1S93 Lumo has wires down around it just north of Manors station and no power or air on.
People started self evacuating and now passengers are being transferred to Northern’s 2N21.

I thought the Lumo sets had batteries so HVAC could be maintained? What went wrong there I wonder?

Avanti have suspended all services for the remainder of the evening. From what it looks like it’s a mixture to all the line closures and crew being displaced. I can imagine quite a lot of trains were sat waiting for staff

To update wires not down, OHL has tripped on that like but won’t reset. Customers evacuated to another train.

They do have battery for the very reason you mention, no idea what has gone wrong

Three Bridges ASC was being evacuated due to a cable drum fire next to the building, but it seems to be under control now.

And this is why we need laws on working in heat.

A far better reason to strike than because, like everyone else, we're affected by the cost of living and want more money

I think Avanti are still trying to salvage something from the day. 9Z70 16:35 Preston - Edinburgh now heading north.

1M08 0737 Glasgow C-Euston, which was already 55 mins late, has been standing between Apsley and Kings Langley since around 1315, according to RTT and Open Train Times.
1047 Liverpool to Euston trapped between Cheddington and Tring has now moved forward passed Tring. Stuck since just after 1 now 4 1/2 hours late but at least moving

Well I certainly hope there is a rule book with limits not just on temperature ( high & low ) but also carbon monoxide , carbon dioxide , Ozone , humidity , ventilation ( air change rate ) to name a few - with sensors in place and alerts to warn . Only the driver knows if the complaint was genuine or not .
