I just lifted this from National Rail Enquires EMR section, hope this helps in a small way (don't shoot the messenger please)
Intercity Services:

There will be an hourly service between Sheffield and Leicester in both directions until 10:00.

There will be no train service from Nottingham to London St Pancras International in both directions until 10:00.
The problem is that someone wishing to travel from Leicester to London may well assume they're going to be fine, since they're not going to Sheffield or travelling from Nottingham. If you understand the routes you can work out that you won't be able to go to London, but a casual passenger may not.

To follow up on an earlier post, how much damage do we think was done to infrastructure because of things moving rather than not moving?

My sense is most of the damage has been lineside fires and OHL that would have come down anyway?

It seems to me like there will be a difficult call to make in future if temps are above 37 ish. Add in the displaced passengers and staff having a torrid time maybe the parts of the network will need to be closed?

WCML seems completely shut down at Lancaster: nothing to/from Preston nor to/from Carlisle. Even the Furness and Bentham lines are turning traffic back at Carnforth.

Cheers v much all. She’s on it and says it’s quite empty.
My friend says she’s been told there’s a problem at Newark (by her description it’s the flat crossing) and she’s currently on the train sat in a loop between Newark and Doncaster.

Hull Trains tweeted about an hour ago that they won't have any service today.

It’s weird isn’t it, how people find it hard to believe that the first ever 200 year period of a species on earth digging stuff up and burning it in massive quantities, setting all those gases off into an atmosphere that stops just 60 miles ish above earth might impact the climate that operates within that really quite small space.

Much more likely that it is all a random coincidence of course.

You can see the same people sitting in a garage with the door closed, with a car chugging away saying everything is just lovely, care for a sandwich.
Individual events cannot really just be attributed to man made climate change, events like these happen all the time around the world. At lot of people over the last few days on social media have played down the summer of 1976, and whilst it wasn't quite as hot as the last two days it did last a long time. Those of us around who remember people having to queue in the streets for water will tell you it was quite some event.

That's not to say man made climate change isn't real, it most certainly is. But these are not entirely unprecedented events by any means, what we do have to worry about is if they become the norm. And given that mankind has been setting the scene for millennia not just a couple of hundred years, we will have to face the realisation that a reversal will likely take decades, maybe centuries to have a full effect and as such we need plan & build infrastructure that will better deal with things like this.

It's funny how 1976 was clearly bad, but now it is being played down by many to make it sound like this 40 degree incident was no big deal. History being rewritten to make it sound like everyone carried on as normal in 1976 and it was all part of better times before anyone dared tell you what you should or shouldn't do. A total fantasy.

I saw someone running a hose pipe and pouring it down the drain on Facebook this morning as a 'f u' to the water company asking people to limit their use of water.

Back on topic, there are proving trains out on the ECML specifically to test the overhead wiring, so hopefully all goes well.

Temperature records beaten in 34 places is literally unprecedented. A new thing that hasn't happened before is what the word means.

According to Real Time Trains, this is the reason for last night's 20:01 Reading to Gatwick Airport cancellation.
This service was cancelled due to a problem with the on-board safety systems (M0).

The 21:29 was cancelled for this reason:
This service was cancelled due to an issue with the train crew (TH).

The 21:01 for this reason
This service was cancelled due to the train operator's request (TB).

The 22:29 has no reason and surprise surprise the 23;20 left on time. Given they were advising people not to travel I coolant tale a risk with the 23:20 running as they might say no we aren't good to get you home if it's cancelled as there is sever weather corruption.

Still, because they cancelled these late I put in a delay repay claim of 50% as I was more than an hour late.
Edit: I wasn't an hour late. I was compared to an average journey I might make earlier in an evening, using an unofficial 5 minute connection but I was not officially that delayed. Officially I was less than 15 minutes late. It certainly felt like I was over an hour late but I wasn't.

Maybe they really were trying to get staff to run these services and just couldn't at the last minute. After all the 20:01 did make it to the platform. Be interesting to see if they run tonight.

Some of these location don’t have a particular long history, just few decades. There is some evidence from tree rings that summers were very hot when the Romans were here about 2000 years ago, so might be part of regular cycle. But I don’t think climate change should be for this thread.

My point is, have nearly 200 years of railways in UK, and if were not measuring temperatures on wide scale for first 50 -150 years, how can you say it is unprecedented, especially as one of the 10 hottest days was over 100 years ago

My son is on a Saphos/LSL charter today, Crewe-Carlisle via Chester, Wigan, Blackburn and the S&C.
Seems to be running well so far, with 2x20s on the front (attached at Chester) instead of the intended steam loco.
It was remarkable how normal things seemed at Chester, with TfW, Avanti (221), Northern and Merseyrail all running well after yesterday's disruption.
Much cooler today, of course.
But the WCML looks bad at Lancaster and Birmingham.
The Hatch End repairs seem to have been completed.

Appears to be no trains between Scarborough and Hull today.
Service resumes at midday after two days off.
Throughout the heatwave trains have run between York and Scarborough in higher temperatures.
TPE cancelled all Hull to Manchester trains yesterday, but Northern ran to Leeds using the same rails.

Currently on 9S44 0643 EUS - EDB terminating at Preston and have been diverted via Northampton and Aston (so far). A lot of contempt last night at Euston for Caledonian Sleeper after it emerged that it would’ve been nigh on impossible for it to run and they should’ve cancelled them in advance rather than promise the impossible.

Update re. WCML at Lancaster (from speaking to station staff):-

The OHLE is damaged at Hest Bank, between Lancaster and Carnforth. The electrical isolation runs from Garstang (between Lancaster and Preston) through to Carnforth; so in effect, no electric trains can run north of Preston.

Northern are running buses comprehensively between Lancaster and Morecambe or Carnforth; but no TOC seems to have arranged anything between Lancaster and Preston! Northern could in theory run diesel trains between Preston and Lancaster but so far 1C50 (05:25 Manchester Airport - Barrow) was turned back at Preston because of "damage to the overhead wires" (RTT).

Avanti staff at Lancaster were speculating that 1C70 (08:27 Manchester Airport - Windermere) might venture to Lancaster; but already this is apparently cancelled throughout because of overhead line damage (RTT) !

Leaving aside that Lancaster is once again cut off from the world for want of a diesel shuttle, the other curiosity of some technical interest is that the OHLE seems to have been damaged in the cool weather at 01:30 / 02:00 this morning (RTT) so not in the peak of yesterday's 30 - 35 C heat.

Where do passengers stand on Delay Repay on trains that were cancelled then reinstated?

EMR's current offering on service disruptions Sheffield-London carries the information that trains won't run south of Leicester until 1000. AND on the same listing, a long list of pre-1000 trains that have been reinstated. Both items claim to have been posted at 0506 - presumably the reinstatements were added much later.

But what about people who learn of the reinstatements too late to set off to catch them? Are they entitled to Delay Repay based on the first train that they could reasonably be expected to catch once they had learned of the reinstatements? Can they claim Delay Repay based on the first train that they had been told to expect before the reinstatements?

I wonder if the wind has tipped things over the edge. In Herts the wind picked up the evening. Anything happily sagging in the day would then start to move. Not sure if the same happened in the North West.

Fair play to XC, despite the fun around Birmingham (I'm assuming they are being diverted around that area given the damage yesterday and the cancelation of the New Street stop on those services), my partners train this morning down to Devon was only just late. Running a doubled up voyager with one set locked out due to staff shortages but still, better than what we were expecting!
I saw someone running a hose pipe and pouring it down the drain on Facebook this morning as a 'f u' to the water company asking people to limit their use of water.
I seriously can't believe adults can act so bloody childish. It explains a lot about our current situation I think!

Slightly ridiculous LNER haven’t implemented ticket acceptance on other routes.
Is there any capacity to carry LNER passengers considering the level of disruption on the MML and WCML? They could well have asked to have been told "No, we can't carry our own let alone yours!".

Chaos at nottm station right now. 9.50 (1st london train) cancelled same with 10.14. Pax advised to board 10.20 to crewe and change at derby. Of course that is a 2 car jobbie. Pax getting left behind but still surprised most of them squeezed in. Train now standing on platform...

Almost certainly not. It’s bad enough when just one of the three is closed/disrupted due to engineering, and a largely normal service is operating on the others.
