hello. I am a railroad fanatic living in Daegu Metropolitan City, Korea.

While studying machinery, I also watch railroad cars.

I'm writing this because I have a question while watching YouTube.

I would like to ask a question about the AWS signal equipment of existing old vehicles, not new vehicles.
(eg. class 390. class 66. class 57. class 321)

While watching YouTube, I saw a vehicle cab where the AWS signal equipment was replaced with a new LED type.

Some vehicles have also replaced the warning sound speaker.

What I want to know is, I want to know the AWS signaling equipment manufacturers.

What you want to know while looking at the English page of Wikipedia is to write a report on the new LED AWS equipment replaced on a train equipped with TPWS standard type.

For reference, I am a Korean, but in the case of Korean railways, Hyundai Rotem is the only train manufacturer.

However, due to the severe monopoly of Hyundai Rotem, there is a limit to its technological prowess.

So, I watch a lot of content mainly on European railroads.

Please understand that it was written based on Korean grammar.

I believe AWS and TPWS equipment is now produced by Thales.
TPWS has always been a Thales product - as I understand it they developed it; although the company was known as Redifon-MEL at the time (a Thomson-CSF subsidiary). Thomson-CSF was re-brand as Thales not long after they acquired Racal.

For onboard AWS/TPWS, you have Thales and Unipart, who each currently offer a ”Mark 4” system.

I’m not sure what the OP means by ”Light Emitting Diode” type of AWS - do they mean with regards to the driver-machine interface?

Yes, they could be using LED when they mean LCD, which would account for use on DMIs - unless there are any units getting about where the sunflower is an LED array rather than the mechanical wheel?

Presumably this: AWS LED Alarm & Indicator

Functional Description The LED Alarm and Indicator Unit forms an integral part of the Automatic Warning Sub-System fitted to traction and rolling stock driving vehicles. The purpose of the alarm and indicator unit within the AWS system is to provide various in-cab indications, to gain the attention of drivers of the approach of features that are likely to require a reduction in speed. The indicator circuitry includes a two state bistable device and indicator proving circuitry.

Ah, so a retrofit LED sunflower for existing AWS installations.

Wasnt the original one the ones developed by Hudd and the LNER before WW2? Amazing that the same tech was used back then (on steam locos) and is still fitted to new trains delivered today.

Well… AWS is only going to be superseded by ETCS.

thank you.

Is it an AWS equipment that is replaced with a new one from the existing old AWS equipment?

Are you currently producing and installing the existing standard TPWS equipment?

I would expect that spare parts are available, but over time, British rolling stock will be converted to Mk4 TPWS supplied by Thales (soon to become Hitachi Rail) and Unipart.

all right. And Mors-Smitt is also supplying AWS and TPWS equipment, but aren't there a lot of trains equipped with it?

For reference, it says that it was delivered to a new train operated by Greater Anglia.

For reference, I watched a video of the Class 755 train cab on YouTube. I watched the TPWS, AWS signal in action.

That is a good observation. I work mainly on freight vehicles, which is why I haven’t seen a lot of Mors-Smitt equipment, apart from relays.

According to this datasheet, they offer a rack-mounted TPWS+STM control unit that connects to either a physical or ’virtual’ driver interface. It looks like Mors-Smitt has been adopted on Bombardier/Alstom and Stadler multiple units.
