So the postman arrived from Deutschland...

Fleischmann SBB WRm to go with the rest of EC9. Also I've found a nice German who will make me the transfers for the Panoramawagen so that project is fully on. Also very helpfully SBB publish the RAL numbers for their liveries, so that'll make paint matching nice and easy.

And seeing how it would have been rude and inefficient to pay UPS to just deliver one coach. So this nice little Shimmns covered steel wagon from Modellbahn Union. Which is in fact made by Dapol and it a very tasty little wagon.

Blimey everyone is buying nice things!
All I’ve had is an outbreak of raccoons unfortunately…

I bought a model of number 71000 from my local model shop yesterday.

Given the current rrp of the loco £200+ I was surprised when the shop manager told me the chap who is selling it wanted just £20. Immediately I made the decision to have it and paid the £20 asking price.

So I hear you all ask, what was wrong with it to be so low in price.

Number 71000 has the loco to tender plug and socket connection, however, 2 of the wires had come out of the plug and could not be refitted.

I removed the plug and socket, kept the wires and hard wired the pickups from the tender to the respective pickup and motor wires ( for polarity reasons ) on the loco. The model was fitted with a decoder and sound but as I do not run on dcc these were removed.

With the hard wired tender pickups connected to the relevant wires on the loco, the duke now runs smoothly even though it has the dreadful 3 pole motor with a flywheel I will at some point replace the motor with a suitable X9108 5 pole motor if they are still available.

One of my local(ish) model shops was having a fire sale on Lima stuff. Being a Lima geek I couldn't resist!

Under £100 for all three! Think that's a bargain & all run great.

That's pretty darn good going, given you see single Lima models at exhibitions for £100 sometimes! (I myself bought a Lima 37 in BR Blue for £40 back in 2019, but it had been tested and cleaned and still runs pretty well for its age.)

I've had some great finds in charity shops though, more so than model shops...

Though, ironically, almost never in Glasgow - it's almost always been elsewhere. (I did once obtain a brand-new Hornby set for £15, RRP at the time was about £140 or so from what was then my nearest charity shop - 3 min walk at the top of the road.)

Maybe we need a new thread for best model bargains? 8-):E

I've been scouring my local charity shops for cheap old Hornby or Lima coaches to hone my weathering skills on... thus far no luck unfortunately!
I have had luck in Troon, Carlisle, York and in more far flung places such as Inverness!

My best purchase was probably in Carlisle, a Lima GNER HST for a tenner! And the lights even worked!

Some more continental 'N' for you all today! Here are 2x Fleischmann AAE T3 Pocket wagons. Looking forward to getting a decent rake of these together and sticking a nice SBB Cargo Re 193 on the front.

There's a 6-wheel "Express Dairy" milk tanker at the KWVR, seen here with a few other wagons at Oakworth:

After being outbid several times, I have now obtained a representative Hornby model:

The same seller also had this Bachmann model available, and as I think it looks really smart and there a bit of a north east connection* I decided to go for it:

*Middlesbrough not really being in the north east of course!

Going by Hattons logic; a "bargain" is paying £70 for a broken, non-runner, old Dublo loco
No comment :E

I had wondered a couple of times about starting a thread called:

“Cheap model railway bargains and what you’ve done with them”

I was thinking that it would be an interesting idea to buy the odd thing cheaply and do a bit of detailing, weathering etc without it costing much money. There must be a way of getting into the hobby without spending an absolute fortune don’t you think?

I'm glad I isn't just myself that's thought about that basis for a thread or along those rough lines at least

Certainly a noble endeavour in the present economic climate.

As they say: 'nothing ventured, nothing gained '.

Ok I reckon there’s something in this. I’ll try and sort something out over the weekend. :)

They look great and have a quality feel; the tanks in particular are nice and weighty. 'Terratrans' was a gift bought from Hampshire Models, and 'Rinnen' was purchased from Modellbahnshop-Lippe - both at a very reasonable price!

This is an excellent idea. I'm sure I can contribute lots of poor mistakes I've made and ways to not make them while saving money.

Blimey - what a lovely lot of new purchases. Absolutely brilliant to see, though the only issue is now I've got even more ideas for what to buy for my own layout next...
(And I second (third?) the point about Classic Rail - a couple of my engines have come from there and they're amazing. Must make a visit to their shop to seek out these even better bargains!)

Go to Compass Model Railways in Rotherfield as well in one big trip. Similar bargains...
