Unilever have increased wholesale prices across the board.

While soap and cleaning products are often the first items linked to the group it also includes food products branded as Knorr, Hellmann's and Horlicks plus Walls ice cream products.

Directly it will not affect me as I normally do not buy these branded products but others including own brand suppliers are likely to follow.

That report seems to be past tense, ie these rises happened some time ago. Which is consistent with my food price barometer - the price of Marmite (A Unilever product). Given that energy prices have been stable (ish) for the last 4 months or so, and those will have fed through to input prices, I suspect we are now through the primary wave of inflation. There’s still the second wave to go (I rather think we are in it now), and another of couple of wavelets to follow. But We’re through the worst.

Own brands are often produced in the same facilities as branded products. Sometimes the only difference is the packaging, so I'd expect prices to go up across the board.
But more often, albeit not always, a slightly different combination of ingredients.

Not food, but a rarity. Co-op Recycled White Bathroom Tissue has gone DOWN from £3.25 to £2.95. It appears to be the same size and number of sheets, although when I use it I will probably find that it has the texture of emery paper. (*) Annoyingly, I have been stocking up on toilet paper, so have bought a lot at the higher price.

* - I believe there was a German toilet paper called Emery.

ASDA milk 2pts up 5p to £1.30 from last week.

Still £1.25 in M&S today.

However they are not immune from the current trend.

"Remarksable Value" 250g own brand Butter up from £1.70 (which was quite good) to £2

Also same as above Extra Mature Cheddar 550g up from £3.20 to £4.00

Robinson's Fruit Creations. The bog-standard price seemed to be £2, although it could often be bought for £1.50 as an offer. Never seen it higher. Sainsburys and Asda* now charging £2.50, Morrison's £2.49. A whacking 25% increase.

* - one variant is priced at £2.

I've noticed certain things jumping up by a few pence every couple of weeks but this one caught my eye today in Morrisons.

2 Birds Eye Sticky BBQ Chargrills - From £1.80 to £2.79. Quite the jump!

However it turns out a box of 6 is on offer for £3.50 currently so that softens the blow a bit.

Home Bargains has increased most its 500ml drinks bottles to 99p. I refuse to pay that particularly when you can get a 1.5 or 2 litre one for not a lot more than that!!
Also going Lidl and Aldi more, prices so much better-some things I won't or can't get from there but I can see why these two stores are so busy and getting more from here now.
Poundland still has some 75p 500ml bottles such as Drench. Their Welsh Pantry sausage rolls are very nice but they didn't have any in stock today sadly!

The butter in M&S seems quite a good deal as it seems to be about £2.20 in the cheaper supermarkets.

Lidl cheapest and Waitrose most expensive for The Grocer’s "Super Grocer 33" index.

For a different basket of 48 items priced by Which? Aldi was cheapest with again Waitrose most expensive.
Tesco and Sainsburys ~£10 more, Morrisons almost £17, and Waitrose ~£25.

My local Coop selling a 500g Lurpak salted for £4 seems like I've stumbled on El Dorado.

Unfortunately my wife only 2hrs earlier had bought the same thing from Morrisons for £5.

May the Good Lord deliver us. Just trying to imagine these…

Fantastic apparently, well according to my 9 year old! Being autistic he only goes for a limited range of foods although unusually he cannot get enough of fruit and vegetables.

In fairness these grills are basically chicken breast in a BBQ glaze and although they aren't fantastic on fat and salt they aren't as bad as many other processed foods.

Noticed that ASDA are now only selling toilet roll as "double length" - the only issues I have with these are:
  1. The rolls are larger so no longer fit and roll well in the toilet roll holders
  2. The inner core is now a narrow diameter card tube which means they can be stacked in the roll dispensers we have
They claim a 4 pack equals 8 standard rolls, but given the size I can's see that being the case.... but it doesn't stop them charging an extra couple of quid compared to what I paid for "standard" rolls previously !

I also can't see the logic in some of the offers. Sherwoods Sweet and Sour cook in sauce. £2.15 a jar or two jars for £2.50. Just 35p for a second jar, and the equivalent of £1.25 a jar. If they can still make a profit on selling two jars for £1.25 each then selling one at £2.15 is just being greedy

So are Sainsbury’s, as are Andrex, and presumably others. Check the ’pence per hundred sheets’ normaliser on the price ticket, and you’ll see they are definitely cheaper (And definitely double rolls!)

But how big are the sheets? Might be double the number of sheets, but each sheet is only half the size! (slight exaggeration)

Fortunately, I have both available, and a ruler. I can confirm the sheets are the same size (in all dimensions!)

Average number of sheet - Asda Shades standard pack = 180. Asda Shades "double" 320.... Now I may only have an O level in Maths but that's not double ! ;)

Well that’s Asda for you. Try a reputable retailer like Sainsburys ;)

Back to my favourite topic: Milk.
A single pint of semi-skimmed in Tesco now 95p. A mere 73% increase from 12 months ago.

I've had a more detailed look at the prices.
One pint = 95p.
Two pints = £1.30 so 35p for the extra pint.
Four pints = £1.65 so 35p for TWO extra pints.
Six pints = £2.35 so 70p for two / 35p each for the two extra pints.
All things being equal the prices would be 60p / 95p / £1.65 / £2.35.

The 500mm carton of milk is £1.10 at McColl's, from 65p, likewise, they are selling cans of cider @ £2.09, previously £1.30.
Minced raw chicken dog food £1,49 from 99p. (it was £1.29 for a couple of months)
Lidl frozen goose £24.99, was £19.99 last year.
Seabrook multipack crisps went from packet of 6 for £1 to 5 for the same price, now £1.25 for 5

Kingsmill 50:50 bread seems to be changing price every week at the moment. It was £1.05 a few weeks ago and has steadily been increasing to the point where it is being sold for £1.45 today. This is in Sainsburys'

To be fair to Sainsbury some items haven't gone up in price. 8 own brand pork sausages have remained at £1.49 and personally I find them much tastier than equivalents from other supermarkets.

Subway used to be quite a nice treat, I'll have one for lunch...

Footlong Spicy Italian with nothing special added on, a coffee and 3 cookies - about 60p change from a ten pound note!

Almost as cheap as Five Guys these days it seems! I miss the days when they used to shove a book of vouchers through the letterbox randomly

Pleased to see that Tesco Ultra kitchen towel has finally reappeared. Same sheet size*, same number of sheets per roll, still triple-ply. I can't comment on the thickness / absorbancy as I haven't opened the packet. Price was £2.30 for two rolls of 100 sheets, now £2.50 but that may have been the price when they went out of stock in May 2022 (or thereabouts).

I nearly bought a Yule Log (chocolate sponge swiss roll with chocolate goo filling and chocolate coating basically) whilst I was there. Best Before: 17 December! Okay it would be alright to eat at Christmas as it's a 'best before' not a 'use by' but I still think that's a poor stunt to pull, having Christmas stock which expires before Christmas.

* The item is listed as 'new' on the Tesco website. There may be a couple of mm difference in the dimensions from the most recent version but this new pack is the same as 12 months ago.

Hit a big Tesco store in Leicester yesterday, it took me 30 minutes to find the tins of Marvel and at £4.40 i wish i hadn't bothered. Iceland change £3 for exactly the same product.

God, I remember Marvel. I used to buy it as a student because I didn't use much milk and whatever I did buy would 'evaporate' from the communal fridge. Never found it satisfactory though - you always got floaters.

PS I assume you refer to the dried milk product and not super-hero comics in special offer promotional packaging.

I’ve noticed the 900g budget cheese has gone up from £3.99 to £4.19 in all the major supermarkets that stock it.

Asdas being difficult of course have a different packet size but the price per kg is the same give or take a penny.

Sainsbury’s 300g. tin of Peeled New Potatoes in Water up from 55p. to 75p. To be fair, Morrison’s similar tin, quite possibly from the same supplier, has been more expensive for a long time: it is now 85p.

Toilet paper in the DDR made emery paper seem soft.
