Please be careful when using National Rail Enquiries (NRE) - they have set up a deal with a US organisation called Clicktripz which will analyse your enquiry and then suggest hotel accomodation for you by opening a new tab - not really what I need when travelling from Dover to Rochester in Kent - suggestions for a hotel stay in two days time. Perhaps a freedom of information request to see how much money NRE make from this? NRE is in my expereine the only website to do this. The website is bad enough as it is without making more money from a poor service...

When I questined this the response form NRE was:

Thanks for your response. I was sorry to learn that you are unhappy with the advertisement displayed on the tab whilst using our website.

Firstly, I would like to explain that Clicktripz is a contextual ad network that helps websites monetise their exit traffic.

I would also like to explain that National Rail Enquiries displays advertisements for customers who may need to stay at a hotel in line with the government guidelines. This includes those who are travelling for work, where the hotel act’s as someone's main residence, where the person cannot return home, or where the accommodation is used to support the homeless.

We hope that customers will use their judgment when it comes to what is appropriate for their own circumstances. We also display advertisements for future travel dates when people will be able to book overnight stays again.

The advertisements are frequency capped so Clicktripz only serves 2 tabs for each user in 24 hours, i.e. 2 advertisements each day per user elapsed by a minimum of 30 minutes between each other.

I'm pleased to inform you that you could certainly stop the pop-up from clicktripz.com on our website by selecting the opt-out option available on the following link:

I trust this information will help you opt-out of the Clicktripz advertisement, and I hope you have a lovely day.

Thanks again for contacting us, and please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

To be honest it's pretty bad that NRE has any adverts at all for what is supposed to be a public service. It looks very unprofessional and that's aside from the outdated design of the site which I know is being improved.

Its a third party tracking cookie to deliver targeted advertising to the user isn't it? The new tab is effectively a pop up.
Sure. I don't think that's pretty standard on every website, though. It's pretty invasive, IMO.

You would hope that any money made from this would go towards improving the app…you would hope…

Be nice if NRE didn't pop up with ''bad request'' all the time. Its mobile version isn't much better either

Clicktripz is the least of the NRE website's problems. Much more unacceptable, and bringing the rail industry into disrepute, is their pushing of "Complete Savings", which is a rip-off monthly subscription for savings to things you don't want / need.

That would be nice. When it works it's a good, simple, app, but reliability has took a bit of a nose dive lately, and the user interface is clunky and dated. It doesn't scale at all on larger screens either.
