Hi everyone im new on these forums and excited to be here!

I have an assessment to do which was sent out to via email (believe it’s the 1st stage) for the customer service position which was recently posted on TFL careers.

Does anyone have any insight on what the assessment involves? Is it difficult?

I ultimately would like to become a train driver I just thought it would be a good idea to get a foot in the door and work my way up this way? Or would it had been better if I just applied direct for a train driver role without the customer service experience?

Also If there is any links for train driver apprenticeships or trainee roles then please do feel free to share or any courses perhaps?

Thanks

If you want to be a driver just go for it. Some companies recruit internally, others prefer not to as you’re just leaving another role to be filled. There’s no line of promotion so to speak if that helps you.

The first assessment for tfl is pretty straightforward, just hammer the practice material and you'll be fine (unless the assessment is different now).

Tube driver roles are internal only so you would need to 'get a foot in the door' first. As for Train Operating Companies it would be better to wait for a driving role (if you live near multiple depots, e.g., London). If you are not close to many depots then probably best to 'get a foot in the door' as you say.

In terms of apprenticeships etc I would recommend bookmarking the careers section of every Train Operating Company within an hour of you and setting up job alerts.

Some people have reported not receiving job alerts, me included. Always good to do belt and braces and check websites daily too.
