SWR Class 458 to be retained

Was consideration ever given to having mixed seating on the 450s - 2+2 at the ends, 3+2 in the middle - as with some 375s and 377s?
Never publicised as a proposal by Stagecoach as far as I recall. Using 12.450s with 2+3 seating was their solution to meet the peak seating numbers required by DfT on various routes such as the Portsmouth direct.

Should really be the other way round (2+2 in the middle section) as standees are more likely to move into the middle than the ends, so that doors are easier to reach if getting off before the terminus.

Don’t you think they’d have done it if it’d had been the most feasible option though? If it’s an idea that almost every enthusiast can think of, it’s almost definitely occurred to the bigwigs at SWR, and for some reason they’ve not gone with that, so there’s probably a reason. We know Porterbrook charge astronomical leasing fees for a start, and SWR’s current Desiros are also owned by Angel Trains.

Besides, the 458s were probably offered a dirt cheap lease.

Anyway it’s all pie-in-the-sky when the Juniper conversion is the chosen and happening plan!
You say Porterbrook charge astronomical leases but the 458s that SWR are leasing are being leased from…. Porterbrook.

You know they charge astronomical leasing fees, do you? Other than Bletchleyite's ad nauseam repetition of this, there's little hard evidence. Interesting that the 172s, procured at the same time as the 350/2s from the same ROSCO, haven't been replaced by a large 196 order.

By Porterbrook - who charge astronomical leasing fees, apparently...

Leasing costs vary from fleet to fleet, and are usually representative of the economic conditions around when the units were first procured. Not all Porterbrook fleets are poorly priced.

Exterior refurb of 458s 507 and 517, underway at Widnes early November 2023. 11 car pendolino set 390115 to the right.

To my understanding the 458 program is and is not paused, SWR/Porterbrook are contractually tied in to converting 3 units. These 3 units will make their way to Bournemouth eventually and will receive shakedown and some crew training for evaluation. Whether or not they’ll see service is another matter.
It seems the project is currently proceeding on the assumption that all 28 units will be refurbished but that they will not enter passenger service, which seems absolutely bonkers. That's not to say things can't change.

@hapt1n did not give context for the photo so, considering the previous post asked for new information, it's not hard to understand why @Bigfoot would assume it was posted as a recent photo. It's one I haven't seen before, but you are overreacting.

If there’s a ticking off to be given I rather suspect you’re not whose place it is to do so. That said, it’s a picture I’m not familiar with, but I’m rather keen to see one stickered up with logos.

It seems not just bonkers but a repeat of the 442 waste of money. Really they need to decide now whether to proceed or not, not after the money has been spent and the time and resources used.

I posted the picture for general interest following the earlier comment 'I have not seen any photos'

For clarity, it was taken a few months ago and I do have the owners permission to upload it.

It's very difficult to make a judgement regarding if money is being well spent without entering realm of speculation.

There is some evidence that peak hour extra trains will be needed Tuesday-Thursday. General agreement that Friday services in commuter land should be same as Saturday. Monday going forward is harder to judge.

The simple question is, if need one extra morning peak train, and one evening return, just 3 days a week, what do you economically serve it with. At that level of utilisation got to find something not much above scrap value, or at very least that is cheap for next decade.

If can't provide capacity on those busy mid week services, then alternative is leaving people behind, which perhaps justifies not being a waste of money

By no means is this the only railway rolling stock project where this is happening!

That's not a new photo based on the filename comprising of the date and time.

I don't consider Bigfoot's comment to be unreasonable; after all, one of the forum rules reads:
If posting an image or video, please provide, as appropriate: a brief summary or description; details of the source; and a relevant comment to promote discussion.
And such a description really should include at least some indication of the date.

I posted the picture for general interest following the earlier comment 'I have not seen any photos'

As Doomotron notes, there's probably been a difference of understanding - you say you posted it in response to the comment "I have not seen any photos", but I suspect of lot of people here interpreted it as responding to "Are there any updates on the Class 458 refurbishment" instead and thus assumed it would be a new photo.

Nevertheless, to the best of my recollection it's not one that's been posted here before, so thanks.

Posting a photo months old in a reply to a thread asking for updates with no date or information/description isn't doing 'a solid'. Exif data isn't exactly hard to find/read.

It is a photo that I haven't seen before either here or elsewhere.
I wanted to find out if it was more units being worked on or just more photos of the first unit that was being refurbished (given the unit isn't finished in the photograph) Exif data helps greatly with this.

Sorry I beg your pardon I was wrong, it wasn’t an interior shot just the seats to be fitted. :)

Ok, yes as far as it goes we do require some text with photos as stated above. Probably not worth arguing about though.

So that being said, let’s all move on into a happy future discussing SWR class 458s together with light in our hearts…

Thanks. ;)

Eww, why are they replacing the seats?
The current seats are really comfortable, they just need a retrim and armrests fitting

I do wonder if the 458s will speed up dwell time? The 444/450 doors are painfully slow to open and close, not to mention the DGO procedure that comes with it. If 458s are to run on the same services alongside 444 and 450s, then I might imagine them arriving at stations slightly early.

For clarity the first class seats will be new FISA Leans (same as refurb desiros). The standards seats are the originals retrimed.
