I thought of this post when I alighted from the Sleeper this morning and noticed there is a double-arrow flag flying above Euston!

There's a double arrow flag now being flown from a new flagpole at the north entrance of Reading station (operated by Network Rail). I presume it's also another one of Sir Peter's initiatives.

That right hand photo shows how ridiculous these signs are, and how their research was flawed. That just isn't eyecatching from the background. A dark blue sign with white lettering would stand out far more. Even putting coloured bands under each line would catch the eye better.
At least it doesn't use a double arrow for the platform symbols.

That flag just looks sad. Not even on the highest point, tilted over like it's forgotten at the back of a Ship rather than vertical, visible and proud.

Just about summarises the state of things!

I must admit I did audibly laugh when I saw the state of that flag.

(Haven’t really been following this thread closely.)
Is there any reason why the DfT are funding East Midlands Railway to re-sign Sheffield in what appears to be a bespoke ‘TOC’ style rather than the GBR one?

Why leave so much space? Why not enlarge the letters and dividing lines to make it more eye catching?
On the whole I quite like EMR's new station signs, even (or perhaps especially!) with them being different to GBR/RA2/call-it-what-you-will. But, why use a sign board designed to take 5 lines of text for a 3-line sign?!

Its been stuck on over the top of the old sign, so some of them have fewer lines than before, or have more lines on one side than the other.

Meadowhall has them, not sure how long or if it was mentioned, but it’s confusing to navigate and signs are needed in places that they aren’t.

When I was back in Barrow I saw a new bunch of block letters have been put up inside above of the main door reading "Welcome to Barrow in Furness" which I think is set in RA2. I don't think anything else has been changed yet. Not particularly well done though since you can see where they've painted underneath it and the paint colour doesn't match the rest of the wall.

Noticed in passing today the new platform at Castleford has had the new signs put up recently (about 4 or 5 of them actually which seems a bit overkill!)

I think Thanet Parkway is using the new font and symbols (?) on the signs but the colour scheme and layout is still the Govia Southeastern design.

The font is new (and IMO uglier than the normal Southeastern font) but the general design is entirely Southeastern, with the exception of the logos which are the newer design rather than Southeastern's previous logo design (with lilac rather than bright blue and no dot). I am not sure if any other SE stations have that logo.

Can someone post some pictures please, I'm getting confused now. Are the signs in RA2 but to SE style or some completely different style?

Whoever did the sign at the entrance to Frant station needs a slapped wrist.

I was half expecting a Sealink ferry to come sailing in.

it’s wierd on Southeastern. it’s mostly the standard Southeastern sign with the lilac, however more and more “Platform 1 for trains to etc” sign are popping up in the Network Rail Brunel font. Stations that spring to mind are Petts Wood, Kemsing and Charing

Oh yeah, that's RA2... What an absolute mess... For a design that was supposed to create a clean, uniformed look, it's not really going well is it?!
That's true. I was surprised that when Thanet Parkway was built it didn't have GBR signs. Arguably the temporary 'Thanet Parkway station now open' signs look more like GBR, but I don't even think the font is RA2 either.

Considering the scattergun approach to rolling this out and the tight finances perhaps this should be knocked on the head now and let TOCs carry on with their own thing.

I don't understand why this seemingly is all so difficult. Network Rail have put out a manual to the various TOCs which describes how to design signage for stations in much the same way National Highways issue manuals to local authorities on how to design signage for the road network. And bar some subtle misinterpretations road signage manages to look consistent UK wide with infinitely more local authorities and signs while it seems you can do whatever you want at stations. There's a manual, follow it.

Wow, someone's finally followed the manual it seems!

To be fair I doubt it's meant to be a GBR sign, but the station itself does feel like it should be GBR.
GBR doesn't exist yet, and isn't likely to until after the next general election. At the moment, it's still the TOCs and/or Network Rail who are doing the station signs.
