These photos really capture the period when I was getting into trains (I'd have been five or six when this was taken), but I love this one because it depicts what I used to see on the roads, too. The Austin 1100s and Hillman Imps were probably fairly rare by then (the D plate on the Imp gives its age away), but Allegros were very common, and the Chrysler Alpine is instantly recognisable because my grandfather had one.
The wagons aren’t Cargowaggons but the UKF bagged fertiliser vans that worked all over the country from the Stanlow area (Ince?)47346 whirrs into Crewe from the North with a train of Cargowaggons
56076 under construction in 1980 in its green primer at Crewe probably. Being a BREL one it probably performed a bit better when in service than the Romanian predecessors! You can see the production line in action.....there's another chassis next to the camera

This paint job was in honour of the Charles & Diana wedding, wasn't it? Did it subsequently run without the red & blue stripes on the logo?Worst 47 paint job ever? Just saying.....!
This is Carstairs in 1981, and it's just arrived with the Edinburgh portion of a WCML service. The Glasgow portion would come past in the opposite direction on the adjacent platform, and 47583 would run up the line and then reverse the Edinburgh portion on to the back of the Glasgow. The coaches were connected and the loco uncoupled, and the joined train would head off with its AC loco and 47583 would wait at the stabling point until the process was reversed!
