In the days when the Manchester/Liverpool trains split at Carstairs for Glasgow/Edinburgh you could quite often get rare locos on the Carstairs to Edinburgh portion. On this day it was 40050 into Edinburgh and 47297 back to Carstairs. However waiting at Carstairs to take the train to Preston was Thrystor locomotive 87101, quite a rarity on passenger workings.

Four years ago today I was on a Thames Rover from Goring to London via various stops, however all I know was that I scored many IETs, 387s and a 165 to Windsor/Marlow and return.

Eleven years ago I took a S-Bahn from München-Feldmoching to München Hbf then a RE from Hbf to Salzburg. I know it wasn't IC or ICE because I had a Ländes(Bayern) ticket.

Wow! That was a rarity! Was it a one-off, or a temporary diagram caused by 'a higher than usual number of units awaiting repairs' due to leaf fall-related wheel flats?

IIRC there was an issue with the braking systems on the inner suburban units (wheel slide detection). A couple of unit diagrams on the Pompey line were changed to pairs of 73s and either TC stock or a mark 1 set to free up the units to cover the inner suburban workings.

I can’t recall how long the loco hauled workings ran for but it was Mondays to Fridays until a work around for the brake issues were resolved.

The class 508s were withdrawn from traffic because of issues with leaves on the line. The class 73 workings operated from 02/11/81 to 04/12/81, a period of 5 weeks. In the evening peak the 1732 to Pompey and the 1734 to Basingstoke were loco hauled Mark Is. The TC diagram stayed out all day and in the evening included the 1629 up from Pompey.

Made it! I’m upto date on this thread. It’s taken about 3 months to read through from the start, obviously in fits and spurts, but what a fabulous journey. Lots of memories for me from the early to mid ‘80’s stuff, but it has been equally fascinating to realise the variety that had already been lost by then and also which new traction became popular afterwards.

I reckon we have had examples of most diesel classes on regular passenger workings - are we missing any? 24’s and 44’s maybe? Would 22/29 class ever have worked passenger?

I wasn't thinking of counting rail tours, but would allow ADEX, Footex etc. Also meant to include electrics. Only in the last few pages there has been examples of class 74. Of the original AC electrics - 81,83,84,85 all mentioned - did we have an 82?

Post #2851 has my only 82 haulage.

I'm sure @CW2 had a few...

I've had a few runs with 82s. To my mind the Roarer (class 81 - 85) order of magnitude was:
Class 84
Class 82 and Class 83 equal
Class 81
Class 85

Basically, if you saw a class 84 on a passenger service you would ignore everything else and do it, they were that rare.
Class 82 / 83 were also pretty rare on passenger, because of their somewhat temperamental and explosive nature. You'd feel pretty pleased if you got one on a passenger working.
Class 81s were slightly more common on passenger workings.
Class 85s were the most numerous and were the first choice replacement if the booked 86/87 wasn't available.

My class 82 runs were:
