A career as a signaller

Have a look in the “a career as a signaller” thread. In short, no, as you’ll get training, and also not necessarily, some lower grade boxes may be busier in terms of workload. The thread is the “bible” for signaller applications. Give it a search before asking questions (in the nicest way possible!) as most things have been answered!

Hi guys, 1st post on here :D

I have recently applied for the above position and passed the online ability tests, the next step if I'm successful is live video interview and a signaller scenario assessment, I would like to prepare for these, can anyone please give me some information, what does this assessment involve?

Thanks very much

You get a day off in lieu of you opt for lower rate of pay. If you opt for higher rate of pay you get the day paid on top of your usual salary for the day.
Does this apply whether or not you’re scheduled to work on the bank holiday?

Hi.

Recently having done these myself, the video interview I found was quite relaxed. It was myself and two people interviewing me, and it was mostly "tell me a time when..." questions, so make sure to read up on the STAR method and some stuff about why I want to be a signaller, where I'm from, tell them a bit about yourself etc.
For the assessment, it was a scenario with me roleplaying as a signaller. Mine was one where something was found on the track, you had to coordinate for the MOM to go on track and the other actions you may take - it wasn't too bad. I'd recommend reading up on styles of clear, concise communication beforehand...

Good luck :)

Had my medical on the 15th November, but still haven't heard anything further. I was told I passed everything on the day, but wondering if this seems like longer than usual with no further info?

Thank you, so is the scenario and the interview done on line then? Out of curiosity once they contact you for the interview how long do you have to prepare, I don’t want to prepare for 2 weeks just now then not get an interview

When I did them they were both online, the assessment was recorded and the interview was live, not sure if that's changed or not though. They sent me an email 8 days before the interview date and you had to do the assessment before the interview.

I just did mine, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I definitely felt very nervous so didn't get everything across as I wanted to.

I have a face to face interview tomorrow which seems weird as everyone else seems to be having theirs online

I've just recently done my video assessment, felt it went okay. I was very nervous so probably didn't do as well as I would have liked, but managed to see the problem on the 3rd question coming, so I'm hoping that it reflects well.

I'm very nervous about my face to face interview tomorrow, I'm hoping that I'll be okay.

I had mine today and passed and the lady asked about medication and asked a series of questions about mental and physical health etc. She didn't ask for GP's details they seem to be reliant on you being transparent.

Got this through, after waiting 5/6 weeks from the interview. Only a couple left to wait.

I'm currently on the reserve list after a G9 interview, and the same position I applied for had been re-advertised. I have been advised I need to re-apply for this, does this mean I will need to do another interview?

Not necessarily no, they should be able to use your last interview scores with your permission if you qualify for interview if it’s within a certain timeframe.

It might be just to prove you still want to be considered for the job (you may have had better offers since then, or changed your mind) or it may be an ever so slightly different job and therefore needs you to actually apply again (permanent not secondment, resident not relief, etc - even sometimes just a different HR number because it’s a different budget)

Thanks very much! Its been under a month since the decision email for the previous, same role too (advertised as 6,7&9). Just need to decide if I'd want to do another interview to potentially improve!

Currently waiting to do my Interview for Grade 2 - Cupar, Leuchars & Tayside. Very excited as this is this the first time I've been given an interview.
I did my Online Scenario Test last night and I now understand why everyone describes it as weird. It is very awkward! To anyone else who is looking for advice on that section, all the information is given to you, you just need to compose yourself and not let the timer stress you out. I do think I got some value however from brushing up on communication guidelines and their safety vision. If anyone has any questions about it I'm happy to answer.

As for how I thought about my performance? I thought I did alright. I understand everyone feels like they did terribly so I'm using that to temper my expectations. I definitely did feel nervous though! The timer goes down fast in the moment. One of the questions though I feel I wasn't able to give as much detail as I should have, but I addressed my performance pretty honestly during the reflections section at the end. I don't know if anyone knows what exactly it is they are looking for but I like to imagine if you give a good level of self awareness in the final section, it will reflect well.

Prepping for a TVSC interview, for those in the know, does the OW LOM Reading - SSM cover SSM Inner/Metro or Outer? (Or both?)

Is it for the same panel/area?

I would put it back in and you may need to interview again.

Quick IST update:

Just about to complete Week 3 and have so far passed the first written exam and the first practical.
The “dreaded Week 5” exam is in the two week and the focus is on that, all I say to anyone who is about to start IST is REVISE REVISE REVISE. You will get everything you need to know off the trainers and also a lot of “downtime” to self reflect and go through your notes.

In terms of note taking, make sure you get down as much information that you can. I personally having been using a iPad with a keyboard and I have pages and pages of notes and drawings/diagrams.
You will have plenty time for practical learning/revision on the sims and if your in a small group like me (7 of us) at least 6 hours a week to play on the sim.

But also find time for yourself otherwise your head will just exploded with amount of information that you will take it.
I am quite lucky that I am on a course up in York, so being as its this time of year there is plenty of Christmas type stuff going on plus I have access to the gym at the ROC or and hotel if I want to.

If anyone has any questions or concerns just drop me a line.

I'm on that course (or should be, at least!) :)

hello i also have a interview in person, I was just wondering once you get the interview is there still a long way to go til you get the job as obviously there’s a massive demand for this job I’ve been told the interview is the last step

I you pass the interview then you'll have your medical and reference checks etc so that's actually the last stop.

Hey, Folks.

You all have probably seen this type of question asked a lot, but I'm looking for answers based on my particular situation. I'd appreciate any help at all here.

I've been offered a Grade 2 Signaller Trainee Post in Scotland. I have sent all necessary documents away and have passed my medical. I start my training (the 10/12 week course) in January at the Perth Railway Station.

I am currently a librarian and it is a great job, but there aren't many opportunities to 'climb the ladder'. Are there many opportunities to do this in Network Rail? Also, how difficult is the job itself? The system does look rather complicated and I am aware that the training can be pretty tough.

Any other insights to the role are also welcome (shifts, day-to-day, etc), if any of you have the time.

Many thanks,

Steven.

I have seen the Three Bridges Grade 6,7 and 9 vacancies are back up again. It was only few months ago these jobs were advertised. Wondering why they are available again so quickly?
