What is happening to this loco? It was suppsoed to be at the Chinnor diesel day in 2020, but was withdrawn because of "transit issues" shortly before the whole event was scrapped because of the Dreaded Lurgi.
Then it was withdrawn from the Severn Valley's Diesel Festival in May 2023 at short notice.

Does it work? Has it hauled a passenger train on any preserved line yet?

Will it next be scheduled in 2026?

023 is back at Leicester, looking forlorn again.

How will the driver training on this go?, is it similar enough to a 56 to have some level of commonality or will it be a blank page sorta thing. I haven't been on one for 20 odd years so it will be great to have a catch up, if things go according to plan anyway

Above post got me thinking on this too, are not the class 59, 60 and most of the 66s equipped with much the same drivers desk as that fitted to the class 58s? I do realise the GM locos controls differ due to that central pedestal though.

The SVR Diesel Bash isn't until Thursday 3rd so there's at least 2 weeks of 023 being on site for familiarisation

RTT reports is now at Kiderminster.
SVR not saying anything yet, presumably not wanting to raise hopes only to have them dashed again.

Video of the two 50s (both looking immaculate) arriving at Leicester to take 023 to the SVR yesterday now up on YT. Been following the progress of the recent work on 023 on the Class 58 Group page on FB, fingers crossed things actually go to plan this time (I would be making a beeline for the SVR for the above events if I could, whether or not 023 features):

I would point out that the Yeoman class 59 cabs were allegedly designed around the BREL class 58 cab layout, although the EMD control stand obviously wasn't. It should be noted that the PBL brake was fitted first to class 58s which was a significant change from the traditional rotary brake valve on traction hitherto.

I wonder if they are going to finish of with some mainline branding, numbers, orange warning rail before the gala.

Report on WNXX this morning that 023 has had Mainline Freight decals, Toton cooling tower depot plaques and 'Leicester Depot' nameplates applied, the two photos that accompany the article show it without them though

Have to say, good work by these chaps. Not just in getting it going - which is a fabulous achievement - but in avoiding the predictable original Railfreight or Trainload Coal liveries and going for something different (the best scheme of the three short lived freight companies).

I'll agree about the first part - it's been a long time coming for the team involved, but we'll have to agree to differ on the latter part, particularly haven't spent part of last week around two very smartly Railfreight grey locos :D But then again I always saw more of Transrail in the Sunny South West than Mainline or ToadHaul.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a 58 back in Trainload Coal livery - maybe one for when 58048 returns?

110% agree
The original Railfreight scheme was just OK IMHO. Triple grey just a bit better.
Mainline freight blue with silver detail just took the type 5s to another level. Just a pity Mainline didn't have any 56s because one of those in full Mainline silver and blue would look really nice.

SVR Diesel Gala timetable is up - the 58 does two full runs (Kidderminster to Bridgnorth return), one on Friday, one on Saturday, accompanied by a 20 both times.

Any reason for the 20? Can a 58 not couple directly to SVR coaching stock?
