Not quite as long as that but there used to be an 08:43 off Redcar Central that had a 13 minute scheduled stop in Middlesbrough, given it used to often arrive a couple of minutes early as well you'd have 15 minutes sat in Middlesbrough. Considering the line offers a fairly short journey end to end sitting there used to wind me right up!

@ainsworth74 might remember it, I cannot even recall if there was any obvious operational reason for doing so.
1P66 08:42 [SX] Saltburn to Manchester Airport currently stands at Redcar Central for 17 minutes. On Saturdays, it "only" sits there for 13 minutes, as it departs Saltburn 4 minutes later!

What possible reason is there for departing Saltburn later on a Saturday, as on same times after Redcar? Maybe a planners pencil slipped?

On Saturdays a number of eastbound TPE trains have 15 min waits at Manchester Victoria having done the run from Liverpool in just 36 mins (just 1 min slower than the proposed high speed line!).

Bradford to Huddersfield trains often have to wait 8 mins or so at Halifax which significantly extends the journey time on this circuitous route.

Without trying too hard to second guess the thought process, I can see from RTT that 2N04 and 2D12 have later arrival times into Saltburn on a Saturday, which appears to be caused by a different Tyne & Wear Metro pattern through Sunderland. That directly affects 2N04 and eventually knocks onto 2D12. 1P66 may benefit from that.

Making Saltburn work, when TPE service extensions beyond Redcar were grafted onto an existing Northern pattern, is likely to be the main reason for the excessive westbound TPE dwells at Redcar Central. This won't be an issue in the next timetable, with TPE virtually abandoning Saltburn!

The southbound Highland chieftain Inverness to Kings Cross sits for 15 minutes at Edinburgh. This means that the fastest way of getting from Inverness to London is not by using the one direct service - if I remember right, you can switch to a Lumo service which leaves first and gets to London sooner.

Not quite the longest, but the Crewe -> Manchester Piccadilly via the airport services all seem to have 15 minutes allocated at the airport. Which must be very tedious for people travelling from Styal to Manchester, as these are the only services they get, and means the journey time from Styal to Manchester is considerably longer than that to Crewe, despite Crewe being much further away *and* the latter having a 7-minute wait at Wilmslow.

(Not so bad in the other direction, with only 4 minutes at the airport).

Yes, but there’s a connection into the fast TPE service (to Edinburgh or Glasgow), obviously no good if your destination is Mauldeth Road. The up direction is better as you say, and I get off at Wilmslow so the wait there doesn’t bother me.

Are journeys between Styal and Manchester Piccadilly or vice-versa valid / interavailable via Wilmslow/Stockport?

Yes, it's under 2 miles further via Wilmslow than via Heald Green and Manchester Airport.

Noted. So, at certain times, it *may* be quicker to travel from Styal to/from Manchester Piccadilly via Wilmslow?
For the 3 people who use Styal each day (well, it’s more like 60!), it may be quicker to cross the platform at Wilmslow between the up Crewe service and the down Crewe-Manchester service because the services cross there.
Also note that this is because the mileage on the "direct" route now includes the mileage via the airport; that's OK because it's the shortest route with regular services (and the one that shows in the NRT mileage tables), but the comparison with the "direct" route avoiding the airport is almost 4 miles further via Wilmslow.

If you want to do this on your day out to Styal, note that it’s a tight connection at Wilmslow although from observation it’s usually possible.
