Nothing between Newport and Shrewsbury this morning, hopefully this afternoons marches trains are 4 and 5 coaches, they could be cosy.

Jumped on a GWR IET at Filton Abbeywood, that stated that it was going to Plymouth, which was then promptly cancelled at Bristol.

Apparently Taunton, Exeter etc are flooded, the only trains going south from Temple Meads in the next 4 hours are the going to be the odd service to Weston-Super-Mare.

A lot of people in same boat - needlessly travelling because of incorrect information!
Incorrect info? Their journey check has said no trains are running beyond Weston to Exeter for hours. You can get to Exeter on Falcon every hour if you want to pay or via Westbury and Yeovil as that route is now fully open althought ticket acceptance not in place.

Carmarthen-swansea-paddington also running. However I'm glad I didn't keep my plans of a trip to Cornwall to visit friends.

Northampton station flooded.
and leading to very few LNWR trains running
Apparently the access to Northampton depot is flooded so all they've got is the units/crews* at Bletchley. Potentially a fair few 730s out?

* Presumably until they put a temporary arrangement in place.
I am not sure this is actually happening or if it is it is only just starting. Bletchley sidings, which have been empty for the past week are full of units.

The Marston Vale was fine this morning although the 2 early trains ran empty - i assume to check the track was clear.

Hence why the blanket wide do not travel due to uncertainty.

People still turning up at Gloucester looking for travel.

Doubt it, the line between Bristol Parkway and Swindon is still very much closed
That's odd rtt is showing the services as running, however having now checked the 0656 departure from Swansea it's showing as departing Bristol parkway at 0837 and hasn't yet cleared another station ect on rtt.

Won’t be any to Newport for the rest of the day by the looks of it. 1Zxx trains now being organised to run between Shrewsbury & Hereford but nothing between Hereford & Newport due to a landslide near Pontypool.

Looks like GA are (were?) making an effort to send some trains normally going from Cambridge to Liverpool Street into Stansted Airport instead. Gives a bit more flexibility with people trying to get to the airport, presumably.

Thanks. Presumably it's where the line crosses the river just North of the station. The Upper Nene must be really high - this didn't happen in the 1998 flood. If so, the sets stabled in the station area might possible have water damage.

Strange that, as far as I could see an hour or so ago, LNw running no trains at all North of Tring isn't worth mentioning on either NRES or LNw's 'status & disruption' section, only report is a couple of lifts out of order.

Back in 1998 where was a risk to the appropriately named Riverside Sidings (which had some 321's berthed) , working as "one railway" , and getting some advice from Fleet - we dragged them out with a local 08 to safety. It was pretty disrupted for a while.......

Northampton station is at South Bridge. There's no monitoring there, but West Bridge peak last night was about 1 metre below 1994. But proactivity then.
Stock is now stabled overnight in the bays (12 cars in each) and Platform 3 as well as Riverside Sidings, and no LNw staff about overnight. So quite a few soggy 350s - as well as the problem getting off the depot..

Northampton station is actually at Westbridge.
The station adjacent to South Bridge was the old Bridge Street station closed many decades ago.
Having been in town today, I can vouch that the flooding around the River and north of the station is pretty impressive, although it's far from the first time it's been up top these levels.

My 2p regarding trees on the line:
It's been quite a while [citation needed] since steam trains stopped dropping cinders on lineside saplings, and there ceased to be an immediate requirement to keep linesides clear of foliage. So the trees that have grown up since then are by now quite large, so when exceptional wind blows them down onto the tracks, they're likely to do more damage, and be more of an obstruction.

Anyone know what’s going on between newton abbot and totnes today with GWR, 2z67 seems to have ran as far as newton abbot and then been cancelled, but IC72 has made it to ivybridge 92 late

Not upset about it....it's just sloppy journalism.

A train goes down the train line to arrive at a train station.... doesn't get much easier than that.

Judging by the videos I have seen from Walsden area, it's more likely to be a submarine making that journey

SWR from Exeter to London is doing some heavy lifting today. Just got on one at Basingstoke which is now going nonstop to Waterloo. Crammed, but I did manage to snatch a seat in the last coach. Down Exeter trains are not stopping at Woking or Basingstoke. Passengers from here are being advised to catch the stopper to Salisbury and change there.

Sorry, totally confused myself - I should know better, I'm a native. For South read West and v.v. and it makes sense (I hope).

The flooding around Far Cotton and the station is far from unusual but, in the past, the station has not been so badly affected. Perhaps all the landscaping that's been done along the Northern arm of the Nene (alongside the railway and in connection with the new Northern ring-road & bridge) has increased the flow there, making the excess get down to behind the station quicker. One person's flood relief is another's floods downstream, often.

"Train" has multiple meanings, and basically means (or has come to mean) something that follows something else - a train of thought, a train of cloth behind a long frock, a train of followers behind a leader, celebrity, and so on.

Even in transport terms, train is used in road transport for the strings of freight vehicles crossing Australia.

Railway isn't so diverse in meaning, and is probably preferable to avoid confusion.

Yes, it was pretty damp there on Saturday....but the line was reopened on Sunday morning. It's slightly ironic that the worst flooding on the Calder Valley usually occurs close to the summit of the line. The problem is the extremely shallow bridge that carries the line across Walsden Water just South of Winterbutlee Tunnel. When the beck floods, it just flows straight over the top of the railway (Sorry....train line!) and then goes very rapidly to the left and right into the cuttings. A similar situation appertains on the Leeds-Carlisle line at Switches Farm Crossing - about a mile South of Hellifield - which is the summit of the Skipton-Settle Junction section. There the excess rain water just pours off the sloping fields on the East side of the line, through the crossing gates and then runs both ways along the railway.
