Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

There are but the aisles are relatively narrow and it can be difficult to get on and off when the train is wedged full - performance during times of extremely high footfall tends to plummet as a result with extended station dwell times. People will congregate around the doors for fear of not being able to get off again, which will hopefully change with the new fleet as the aisles are wider and easier to move through.
Can indeed attest to the fact these trains are a lot easier to get off when it's busy because you can actually move

The doors are wider, and there are set-back spaces on either side of the doors too, as opposed to on the current fleet where the bulkheads are almost flush with the edge of the doorway.

The space in and around the doorways on the old fleet was pretty cramped for a metro-type train. As such a lot of effort was put into ensuring that passenger circulation around the doors was as unrestricted as possible on the Stadler fleet.

Can anyone confirm if the relevant safety case for passenger operation on Network Rail metals has been passed at this point for the 555s?

Looks like at least March before trains can run on the Sunderland Branch.

The new Tyne and Wear Metro trains are still not cleared to run to Sunderland.

However, operator Nexus has promised that Wearside passengers will finally get their first chance to ride one before the end of March.

And yet they did "proving" runs in the weeks before Christmas....

I wonder what additional paperwork is needed to carry passengers on the NR rails, they have had a few years to sort it...

Is that the new 555s or also the current units ?.
As in following the problems affecting the tunnel just South of the Type in the centre.
Just the 555s - the line through Gateshead was reopened at the end of last year after some large props were installed underneath the offending flyover.

Yep. 121. I gather another could be added but it’s a bit of a political issue if another is added on the yellow line before one goes down to Sunderland.

Surely they got to look past the optics of it and put a 555 on a diagram if there is units avaliable.

Say they don't introduce another 555 into the mix during February because the optics won't look good if there is 2 units on the yellow line then the targets of introducing one or two trains per month is already behind schedule.

Do we have too see daylight driver training occurring on the Sunderland line before any trains operating on there?

On a side note, has there been some peak trains operating lately as someone posted a photo on the photography group with a train terminating at Monkseaton on trb 151.

The Mackems can cope, if they don’t like it then tough. The rest of us shouldn’t have to suffer unnecessarily just because they’re unhappy. A hypothetical article in the Sunderland Echo and a couple of councillors complaining isn’t reason to delay the rollout.

Nexus are supposed to be operationally independent, if they give in to political pressure on something like this then it would strongly suggest, as I’ve suspected for a while, that the politicians are much more involved than they’re supposed to be.

Yes there’s been a couple of peak services running in the morning/evening this week. Utilising the spare sets that have been available. I believe there were 5 extra sets one of the days.

There’s been a few dates mentioned to staff about the next 555 introductions, but it doesn’t match what has been printed in the chronicle, so who knows…

All I'll say is that the Chronicle article bears no resemblance to what is actually the plan at the moment. Things are always subject to change of course.

Maximum number of peak shorts out at once this week has been two. They're sent out with a diagram to follow but a few times this week they've been used to swap for a faulty set or sent off to plug a gap in service during disruption.

To be fair, the article just quoting what someone at Nexus has said. As you say, things get said and plans change and by the end of next month whilst implies more the back end of the month, it could of course in reality end up being nearing the start of the month.

As for the peak shorts, would be good too have them back, not sure if the passenger numbers justify it mind, it is noticeable on my recent trips how passenger numbers on the system do seem quite low even at peak times but this is only for the afternoon peak and maybe I have been "lucky" to avoid much busier trains.

As a mackem, I think the people of Sunderland and it's environs really don't care whether we get a 555 next, surely the priority is to simply get more into service? And hopefully they will quickly provide a more reliable service then the existing fleet...

And then we can complain about the lack of luggage space when we go on holiday from Ponteland International!

555006 is currently on Kilometre accumulation runs.

No 555 in passenger service today until 10am (13 Feb) - planned works on both the usual sets.

Changeover now planned at Benton. 555 is on the move.
Appears to have been a very last minute change of plan. The Metrocars were initially taken out of service at St James P2 and passengers sent over to P1 to wait for the 555. A few mins later the passengers were sent back to P2 to rejoin the Metrocars.

4072+4087 on T121 failed at Percy Main. I think that means we’re now on to Plan C for the set swap!

Further update. 555021 has entered service at Percy Main.

Just to clarify does that mean 22-23/02/2025 ?.
It varies what people mean by "next".
That's correct. Delivery usually takes place overnight on Thursday into Friday.

It's been a bit of a slow process in the background but I feel like I can say this with some confidence now!

Thanks.
Living in Croydon I will be waiting for something interesting pausing at Dollands Moor.

Someone visually confirmed the delivery as 555 008 and 555 009 earlier today - they posted to that effect on SE Gen on Groups io.

For anyone unaware, T102 is an Airport to South Hylton diagram, the 555s being almost exlusively used on a single St James to South Shields diagram thus far.

This is the first day that a 555 has worked in passenger service on Network Rail infrastructure, and also between Regent Centre and Airport.

Metro have switched from P2 to P1 at Sunderland for this as there are issues at P2 with the 555s.

Both T102 and T121 are now booked 555 Monday-Friday.

008 and 009 arrived at Dollands Moor in the small hours of this morning. As suggested above, they will be there until the departure of 6Q23 tomorrow night, followed by 6Q34 for its final leg.
