Wow looks like an early 1990s airport monorail.

It's all very square and will look older than its years once the shiny paint wears off (if it wears off).

The seats look nice though - intercity style.
The seats are pretty comfy although I feel like the front edge of them raises up a little under the back of the leg. They're not too much like ironing board seats

Aesthetically very poor design but if its 2+2 seating very decent.

It looks a little like a 323 inside.

The seats are good for a tram.

I believe they are the same seats that Hitachi used for LNER Standard Class - awful for a long journey but for tram-work, should be fine and quite a novelty to have inter-city style seating on a tram.

At first I was worried that the floor coverings hadn't been cut properly at the gangway connections, but then I realised that they're temporary coverings, hence the blue tape
Optimist :E. These sort of things can be long term temporary solutions :s.
Does it hide a long term solution waiting to be invented ?.

Just out of interest what are these units going to be used for? I’m aware of the crossrail project but that’s not for a while if I’m not mistaken

Replacement of the 150's (and the temporarily in use 756's) on the Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr Lines and in theory allowing the uplift of service provision to 4 trains per hour instead of the current 2 trains per hour.

They're going to be used on services between Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare, and Treherbert and Cardiff. The tram capability will initially only be used between Queen St and Cardiff Bay, where the line is being dualled and converted to tramway-style operation, but there are (unfunded) plans for street running into East Cardiff and also Hirwaun in the future.

Ah thank you, I assume the platforms will be lowered unless the tram is high floor (which I can’t see from the photos)

They are "low floor" for a train (like the FLIRTS), which is "high floor" for a tram, i.e. doors at normal railway platform height.

Aside from the logstics of lowering all the platforms they will use, it would require having separate 398 and FLIRT platforms or sections of platforms at Queen Street (which is suppose is possible in principle...)

For the time being they will use their abilities to operate as trams only over a very small section of their routes.

Yeah, it's also worth noting that they're not compatible with 750V DC overhead, either - they run from 25kV but have an internal battery. So any street running will be without catenery, powered from the batteries.

When at Taffs Wells yesterday, the gateman told me that no 27 had been delivered Mon.
Its getting difficult to get all the numbers of the outside units with the old bridge being closed and the sighting of the new bridge mor towards the Centre.
Able to get yesterday 01,14,15,13,04,16,12,09,07,11 & 08.

Is the 398 perhaps one of the most hated rolling stock units before it’s even entered service? The hate it receives on social media sites is crazy (mostly because of lack of toilets and design)

Is lack of toilets really a problem? Manchester Metrolink trams manage without them, and some of their routes were conversations from heavy rail.

There's a list as long as your arm. Newcastle Metro, any tram system in the UK, London Overground, Underground, Docklands, South West Trains commuter trains, and so the list goes on.

My bus from Cardiff to the suburbs of Cardiff takes longer than the journey to Merthyr will be and there's no loos on that.
