Is this the longest Avanti service ever?

In terms of both miles and duration.
Mind you, it's a one-off due to engineering work. But Glasgow to London via Manchester, Stoke, Birmingham, Northampton, taking 7.5 hours.

That's genuinely horrendous.

I'm embarrassed to say, as a Pendolino fan, if I were in First Class with a small table to myself and adequate complimentary service, I would actually really enjoy doing that as a novelty - the same way many of you might enjoy a railtour with a loco.

But as a passenger service that's awful.

I'm booked on an Avanti tomorrow going Carlisle to Crewe (mainly because WBQ is shut), I am looking forward to the diversion through Manchester. In my opinion it's better they are running a service than just cutting services off at Preston. Yes my journey is extended by 60 minutes but I'm not that bothered gives me more time to enjoy the First Class.

According to the route quoted above, it wont be going to Crewe either. ;)

And yet, if Avanti don't divert, they get panned for giving up. Damned if they do and damned if they don't...
It would be more sensible to have ran a Glasgow - Preston service, then a Stockport - London via Birmingham and a coach replacement from Preston to Stockport* for passengers to transfer. It wouldn't be quicker but how often is this much of the network shut for engineering at the same time?

Edit * or Crewe.

I think you'll be pleased you're not on it tonight - no First Class service according to JourneyCheck.

Facilities on the 17:34 Glasgow Central to London Euston due 01:04.
Catering is reduced throughout No First Class service.

Oh, don’t be so defeatist. In no way have I criticised Avanti, I’m simply stating that that would be a horrible journey to make, which it would simply due to the seven and a half hour journey time, for reasons out of the TOCs control.

If I had to do that journey I'd much rather do it like that than have to get off the train and onto a replacement bus for part of the journey which if often the norm these days.

So you are actually advocating customers getting off a train, onto a bus then back onto a train; rather than one direct train with no changes?

As others above have said, Avanti are damned if they do and damned if they don’t offer direct trains.

Have to say that I'm with you on that. RRB's never the best option!

There's 1tpw on Sunday evenings, though Glasgow - Stoke must be a first.
Glasgow to London services were diverted via Bolton and Stoke last late early May bank holiday weekend as well, but I can't remember if they called at Stoke. Edit: they were diverted via Bolton, Wilmslow, Crewe and Stoke, but ran nonstop between Crewe and Euston.

What's the longest LNER or GWR route with diversions (I'd guess nothing beating the last non-Riviera Penzance to Paddington of the day which goes via Bristol and Bath)?

Severn Tunnel blocks require a Swindon, Gloucester, Newport. LNER is probably the Newcastle, Carlisle diverts.

They have not ran Inverness to London via Aberdeen as passenger to the best of my knowledge.

They have ran ecs across between Inverness and Aberdeen when there has been weather issues up there
what does ecs mean?

I'd rather the train. Credit to Avanti for diverting.

I did a Glasgow to Euston via the GSW and the S&C a long time ago on a Voyager pair. It was virtually empty until Preston.

Why, when it’s possible to run a train through?

Some long journeys on Avanti today with Glasgow trains going via both Bescot & Bolton (with a couple even going via Northampton like the 09;51 on a 2 track timetable taking an hour to reach Milton Keynes).

Still better than putting all those passengers on the many coaches which would be required
