Covered Bus Stations

How many under cover indoor bus stations are there in the UK?

For the benefit of the doubt, this is where if a bus is parked on the stand and it starts raining, the bus will stay dry, so bus stations where its nose sticks under an overhanging roof don’t count

First ones that spring to mind are

Workington, Cumbria
Nottingham Broadmarsh
Doncaster Interchange

There were of course loads more in the past like Newcastle Eldon Square and Manchester Arndale

Market Gates in Great Yarmouth has a number of stands that are fully undercover, as does Worcester Crowngate, though both have some outside too. Think Rotherham is also in that category. However, Belper is fully undercover, as is Aylesbury! Possibly Maidstone?

Fully undercover ones are, thankfully, now very rare as they tended to be fume filled hellholes. Ones that are no longer around but were undercover...
  • Darlington
  • Sunderland Central
  • Newcastle Worswick Street
  • Blackpool Talbot Road
  • Kendal
  • Chelmsford
  • Wetherby
  • Northampton x 2
  • Bristol
  • Weston super Mare
  • Bradford Interchange
  • Chatham Pentagon
  • Colchester
  • Swansea Singleton Street
  • Eastbourne
  • Whitehaven
There are some old Glasgow ones but before my time

What about Southport Ribble that was in the old railway station? The old Nottingham Victoria.

Victoria Coach Station?
Just to add to @Buzby's post, at Victoria Coach Station Arrivals the vehicles are fully covered, and at Victoria Coach Station Departures the vehicles are covered when passengers and luggage are loaded. The manoeuvring area is not covered, but that's inconsequential to passengers.
At Edinburgh St Andrew Square Bus Station, the vehicles are covered when passengers and luggage are loaded. The manoeuvring area is not covered, but that's inconsequential to passengers.
At North Finchley Bus Station in London, the vehicles are fully covered.

Maidstone Chequers is covered.
As is often the case, with a car park on top of it. We also had the old Bournemouth coach station, that was underneath the bus station up till 1976 (fire). There was Devon General Brixham. Midland Red Birmingham Digbeth.

I believe Buchanan Street was under cover - it certainly looked that way from what I've seen in photos, but it was before my time. I certainly remember Anderston and it was grim! Edinburgh was partly under cover before it was redeveloped.

I believe both the old Doncaster North and Doncaster South were undercover

The middle stands at Rochdale were so it half counts

Old Rhyl bus station that closed in the 90s was as well

I’m annoyed I forgot about Belper considering I’ve visited not long ago

Let us have a picture of Belper then.

Kelso was a bus station cum depot under cover.
I should've remembered that place - it was one of my favourites. Same with Brixham.

I should also have remembered Birmingham Bull Ring which was absolutely appalling. Seem to recall that Lincoln had two that were fully undercover. The old Scunthorpe one was partly undercover for no apparent reason. The old Hull bus station had a canopy over it though it offered little real protection IIRC

@Andyh82 - both Donnie ones were undercover.

The old Lincolnshire bus station/ depot was rather nice, and right outside St Marks railway station. The Lincoln City bus station, was another under a multi storey car park. As an aside, the Stagecoach depot in Lincoln is actually the old railway depot site. Talking of appalling bus stations, I remember Manchester Arndale. It was rather dark. Wonder if Yelloway Rochdale counts?

Part of the previous Warrington Golden Square Bus Station was under cover as well, and then there was a couple in Newcastle-on-Tyne, which I cant remember the names of sadly.

The old Eldon Square bus concourse. Happy(?) memories of spending ages there in thick fumes waiting for Express Link MCW Metrbuses on the old Go Ahead Northern X95.

Longton (PMT) though one or two outside stands IIRC
Cheadle (Staffs) PMT
Oldham Clegg St (NW) only lasted from 1964 to 73
these were combined depots/bus stations

I seem to remember in the 1970s when I lived near Rotherham it had a town centre bus station in the undercroft of a town centre car park. Pretty grim tbh.

The original Bradford Interchange bus station had a full roof.

Correct about Doncaster, spent many times waiting for a bus at the old North Bus Station

My local bus station's like Warrington interchange, Wigan Bus Station and Bolton Interchange are all indoor ones
I was of the impression we were covering bus stations where the buses were undercover. Not the passenger area.

The new Stockport Interchange? But not completely covered.

If you want fume-filled hell-holes try the underground bus station in Santander, Spain!
