I have noticed that 1s37 (pendolino) has seemingly failed just north of Preston. 1z99 has been dispatched to rescue and has arrived, while 9m50 appears to have taken 1s37s passengers? (This is speculation.)
Does anyone know where the thunderbird will be taking 1S37 or any other updates on this?

The tweet below is from Avanti
Due to damage to the overhead electric wires between Preston and Lancaster, the line is blocked.

Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed.

So I assume that 1s37 got stranded after the wires were damaged? Or did the train manage to damage the wires somehow?

That’s something only the driver, Avanti and NWR will know at the moment.

I see that the Thunderbird came from Carlisle, a 90+ minute journey. So, a question for those who know about these things: why no Thunderbird at Preston? I am genuinely interested.

Any chance of some public times so people can more easily work out what trains are being referred to? We don't all have an encyclopedic knowledge of headcodes ;)

Likely relatated to station capacity and where is a logical place, possibly as Carlisle is about half way between Crewe and Edinburgh (i think), as well as having a freight depot, or is it charter? That could be why.

It will most likely be a DRS loco that Avanti/NWR hired.

I could be wrong, but I think Avanti ended there contract to have thunderbirds?

Daft not being able to haul 390s with passengers on board anymore but as failures are rare nowadays TOCs can get away with cost savings like this.

I agree. Would be so much better for passengers if they could be dragged to Lancaster or even all the way to Glasgow rather than having to detrain them in the middle of nowhere!

Thanks - that’s not an acronym for Network Rail that I had heard before! (my first thought was North Western Region)
I've seen it used locally to distinguish between Network Rail and Northern Rail(way), when typing out the full name offers much more clarity ;)

Bizarrely (for me), a Facebook Friend posted she was on a train rescuing other passengers near Preston. I'm guessing that was 9M50. I won't mention this thread to her, she has a low enough opinion of me as it is.

Damaged insulator tripped the section out and then 1S37 couldn't move anywhere (not sure what caused the damage though). Train to train evacuation was done with 9M50 for 141 passengers onboard 1S37.

This may explain why it’s taking a while to clear the section- no use rushing if nothing else electric can get through anyway.

Not intending to get too off-topic, but it's more likely to distinguish between National Rail (NR) and Network Rail (NWR) as these are both very common across this forum.

yeah that's how I've seen it used - also often with a lowercase w. To me, Northern is "NT".

Thhunderbirds are Class 57/3 owned by Direct Rail Services and are hired in to Avanti. As far as I am aware Avanti only have them based at Rugby and Carlisle. When Virgin Trans ran the service there was always one based at Creweand others could often be seen on Crewe, Edge Hill and I think Wembley.

There was one stabled at crewe on Tuesday, not sure if that’s still there.

Might be an ignorant question but how do the logistics of a train-to-train evacuation work when a train is stranded somewhere?

1S37 has started moving northwards- presumably with the 57 on the front. Does anyone know where to- I’d assume Carlisle?

Maybe Carnforth if the pantograph is damaged?.....then a run round and back
Yes- that could be very possible. I suppose we will find out in the next 10 minutes.

Looks like in this case passengers were having to climb down onto the ballast then up into the “new” train.
I wonder what happens to those who physically can’t climb down? Do they get some sort of ramp or other assistance or do they stay on the train?

I've seen pictures before of a little bridge (maybe was the ramp) that goes from door to door

It has been routed in to the platform at Lancaster- perhaps they may carry out a run-round there.
