Can a XCountry ticket be used with another company, if the original train is cancelled

My wife and I are considering travelling from Newcastle to Leeds on Sunday 14th September and would ideally travel with TPE.

However, I see this morning there is a very cheap XCountry service, leaving Newcastle at 09:35, for only £26.99, which seems a bit of a bargain.

There is though, a warning, that the XC service may be changed / cancelled due to industrial action, so I am wondering whether a XCountry ticket could be used with another train company, such as the 10:03 TPE train to Leeds.

We are actually heading to Cardiff, but due to problems, our initial plans of going via Manchester will have to be cancelled.

Assuming this is an advance ticket, then, no, you can’t automatically use a different operator in case of delay or cancellation. Your rights are limited to earlier or later trains with the same operator.
Northern/TPE/LNER are treated as the “same” operator but this does not help you.
You can only do what you want if formal ticket acceptance is in place for Cross Country advance tickets to be used on TPE, which can happen, but is not automatic.

Oh well, that's that idea cancelled.

We can easily take the direct LNER to Kings Cross, but we actually quite like the TPE to Leeds, hence that idea. We could then get LNER to Kings Cross.

Last Sunday we were actually on the 09:45 TPE to Leeds and travelled first class. There were only 2 of us in the carriage. The staff were great and we got a decent breakfast too.
