Gigs or concerts attended

My wife and I went to see LCD Soundsystem at Brixton Academy last night, their final night of eight at the venue over the last couple of weeks. They played a two-hour set across their entire back catalogue, cheered on by an adoring audience. The support act, Working Men's Club, were on first, sounding a combination of eighties synth and modern beats; one for the future. A fantastic evening out.

What was your most recent gig or concert experience, where was it and what did you think? Or what do you have coming up? We have a whole range of musical tastes here and I wonder how that translates to musical events attended. Could be a very interesting thread!

I saw Iron Maiden in Birmingham on Saturday. They played a brilliant set list and the staging/ theatrics were great. The sound was pretty poor, though. Still enjoyed myself.

Most recent, Scooter at Wembley Arena in November last year.
Was a great show and a great audience. Sound and visuals were excellent with a decent amount of pyrotechnics.
For a 30 years tour there was still tonnes of energy from the band. I doubt how much of it was live though.

Other than pub gigs, the only one I've been to was "Boyzone and Friends" at Aberdeen's Capitol in 1995. I bought tickets for my then other half's birthday and, while it wasn't exactly my cup of tea, it was very good value for money. There were five acts, including Sean Maguire (ex-Grange Hill), Deuce and another two whose names escape me. I remember feeling slightly uncomfortable amidst a sea of teenage girls, but the other half loved it.

Last event for me was UB40 and The Stranglers at Wembley Arena in about 1998. Cannot abide crowded noisey places anymore so will continue listening to the wireless instead.

I'm the same, at this stage of life.

Early 2000s, Brixton Academy trips to see Carter USM (the first of several "one off" reunions!), Sultans of Ping, Orbital, Faithless. Victoria Park Mile End for Groove Armada, Mylo, Morcheeba. Chalk Farm Roundhouse (beautifully restored from its Camden steam shed years) to see The Qemists.

Early 1990s Oxford scene music so (among others) Jericho Tavern to see Radiohead (then still named On a Friday), Ride, Supergrass, The Mission, The God Machine, The Hyde, Why Thursday, Headcleaner and goodness knows "who?" bands.

Second half of the 1980s was my metal phase. Manchester International to see Motorhead. Hammersmith Odeon and London Astoria to see Anthrax, Annihilator, Helloween, Living Colour, V2. I'm sure there were a couple of others but grey cells fail me.

Odd as it may sound, they might be one for the past. Two albums out already (the first is fantastic in my opinion, the second merely good), and a couple of weeks ago it was announced that Syd Minsky-Sargent (who is basically WMC with hired help nowadays) has signed to Domino Records as a solo artist. Nobody seems to know yet whether as well as WMC or instead of.

Bud Syd has "it", whatever "it" is. Proper charisma and a real attitude. Last time I saw them was in Birmingham a couple of years ago and he just owned it.

I was very tempted by Metallica but the house purchase has left us penny pinching and unfortunately doing the sensible thing.

Tubular Bells next February in Edinburgh just booked though!

Our paths must have crossed at some stage - I spent most weekends in 1990/91 in Oxford and saw Ride every time they played the Jericho. My best mate at the time knew Mark Gardener and kept telling me his mate’s band was amazing - and they were! God it was noisy

Zammo's dancefloor-slammo ammo!

Zammo was a different character from a different era of Grange Hill. Sean Maguire played Tegs

I don’t go to many gigs these days, partly because of the cost, but also because unless it’s an artist I really like, I find I don’t tend to enjoy them that much.
Having said that I saw Hawkwind recently at the Barbican Centre and they were brilliant as always.
And I saw Sophie B Hawkins at the Jazz Cafe last week. I’d never seen her live before. That was a great gig although she was only on for 70 minutes.

Future gigs lined up are Al Stewart in October and Adam Ant in November .
I've seen both of these geezers several times over the years and both are great live in their very different ways.

The only one I could say I have been to is Download when you could hear it right across Derby!

Oh, of course - Lee Mcdonald! My mid 50s grey cells aren't a patch on what they used to be. I did worry that a bloke in his 60s, is whipping it off and making women scream... :D

You'll remember the Jerry Tav's narrow wooden staircase, up which we trudged. I returned to the pub ten or so years later: wine bar feel, no music offering (as far as I could tell) and all the soul sucked from it...

Living where I live, on the edge of Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, as from tonight if the wind is in the right direction I’ll be able to listen to four nights of ‘Forest Live’ concerts from the comfort of my own back garden.

Over the four nights there is Nile Rodgers & CHIC, Snow Patrol, Sting, and James. Unfortunately none of these are on my usual choice of listen to artists, but I’m not paying so can’t complain.

Past artists have included Blondie, Paul Weller, Robert Plant, Simply Red, The Kaiser Chiefs, Jessie J, Paloma Faith, Plan B and Status Quo. Undoubtedly for me, the best (and loudest) were Status Quo. Had a few beers that night ‘Rockin’ all over the Garden’ :D

We used to go down the road to Raoul's afterwards and drink stuff like cherry brandy and try and look sophisticated and impress girls. It didn't work

I went back around 2010 and everything looked and felt different, and I got quite melancholic about it all

I was in Manchester on Sunday night, phenomenal is the only word I can use to describe it.
The video backdrop was amazing, I would actually pay for a dvd of the video and have the gig as the soundtrack.
The best show and performance I have seen them do and that was the 10th time I've seen them.
Not sure if the 11th time in Berlin next month will match it
I had read that there were some sound issues in Birmingham, not here, everything clear as a bell.
What a venue too, huge concourse space, the full perimeter of the arena, on all 3 levels, plenty merch stands and bars (£9 a pint though, ouch), toilets were only a problem at the end of the gig when it seemed everyone needed to go.
There were even little Co- Op shops selling hot food, sandwiches, drinks (£.20 for a 330ml can, again, ouch)

I was very tempted by Metallica but the house purchase has left us penny pinching and unfortunately doing the sensible thing.

We're doing the no repeat weekend in London next year, 2 tickets came to £343
Got to get there and back and find somewhere to sleep yet!

I’ve seen the Human League and OMD many times over the years. The most recent was in 2024 when I saw OMD in Bristol.

I wish I could have gone to the Heaven 17 concerts a few years ago when they played the first two Human League albums live.

They were good (OMD) at the O² as well, plus (not to brag!) we had Howard Jones and his band as the support act, who were also excellent. Howard had done a CD/download of it which is a nice momento.

Did you find it bit warm in there? I was standing near the front and it got a bit too much for me. Aside from that I really enjoyed it. I thought the screens added to the show loved the Albatross and I get to do it again on Saturday.

I was sitting quite a way back, and it was very warm. But with all those people, the lights and other equipment on a day like that it was always going to be.

The sequence during Mariner was really good, but I especially loved the section during Hallowed. I was wondering if they'd go away from the backdrops, and in general that was a triumph. Shame the big Eddie was only on the screen, but I'll let them off with that. I'd love to see the show with good sound though!

@Peeled Apples @Zomboid How are Iron Maiden with their new live drummer?
He uses a much smaller kit and it's odd actually seeing someone behind there rather than Nicko and his everything in the catalogue setup.

I didn't pay a huge amount of attention to the drums, but one of the guys I went with said he did and he thought Simon had nailed it. I didn't notice anything wrong...

Good do hear he’s doing well, it must have been hard to step into the shoes of a character like Nicko.

I go to quite a lot though mainly smaller ones at independent venues. I'm part of the community ownership of the Exchange in Bristol and am part of the Music Venue Trusts "own our venues" scheme. And most of my friends are from going to gigs. So yeah. Last one was The Dreadnoughts at The Fleece in Bristol which was Saturday just gone, but during the afternoon was also at a friends gig which was being put on as a pre party for the evening (the friend calls himself Mexican Dave if anyone does want to check out folk pop punk played by a Mexican living in Bristol haha). Next one isn't a gig but a festival - 2000 Trees which is near Cheltenham.

I imagine it must be daunting replacing Nicko but it didn’t seem to phase him, he looked like he really was enjoying himself. Being with Steve in British Lion would have helped I should think, I was impressed with him and I heard no complaints from anyone.

Good to hear he’s carrying on with the great reputation of Maiden drummers (well perhaps not Barry Purkis).

Many years ago I saw the Madness tribute act Badness in Blackpool. They were excellent. Not only playing Madness tracks but all sorts of 80s Ska music.
